Event Director
BACKGROUND
The Great History Challenge is a nationwide academic competition for middle school social studies students. Our mission is to use the fun of competition to get students excited about history while providing students who are passionate about history much-needed recognition.
At the Regional Championship, students face off in a live, head-to-head showdown to see who can buzz-in and answer the most questions. It’s a history-themed version of Jeopardy! for middle school students!
THE POSITION
As Event Director, you will manage the Regional Championship event and ensure that participants and their families have a great experience. Event Directors work each event in small teams and collectively are responsible for:
* Overseeing setup on the day of the event
* Supervising event staff/volunteers
* Welcoming participants and their families
* Overseeing the competition and ensuring that it runs fairly in accordance to the rules
* Professionally representing the Great History Challenge to teachers and administrators
It’s a big responsibility, but it’s a wonderful opportunity to travel and work with some fabulous students who are passionate about history.
THE COMMITMENT
Event Director is a part-time position. We expect that you will have other commitments apart from The Great History Challenge, and we’ve designed the position to have virtually no responsibilities except for event dates. The events themselves are in the late afternoons, leaving the mornings free, making this an ideal opportunity for those who work or study remotely.
We schedule 2-3 Regional Championship events per week from February through April. These events are held at middle schools in major cities across the country.
You must attend a mandatory orientation/training where you will meet other Event Directors and learn how to run an event. This training is held in Orlando in late January (date TBA).
You will receive payment for each event you work at the completion of that competition week. We will pay for your travel and lodging, as well as provide you with a stipend for meals & incidental expenses.
