Clinical Data Abstract Neurology Liaison

Reports to the Director, Cardiovascular and Stroke Services. Performs medical record review using defined criteria and guidelines for various required functions within the Stroke Program. Assists in the collection of data for quality improvement projects within the Stroke Program. Maintains and utilizes databases by performing data entry and queries. Works closely with Neurologists to facilitate inpatient tele-neurology rounding.

Performs medical record review for various required functions within the Stroke Program by:

  • Screening medical records for case review and quality indicators by using a defined set of criteria and guidelines.
  • Abstracting and recording data for entry into the computer system.
  • Referring selected quality indicators to the Stroke Program Coordinator for further review.
  • Adjusting abstracting and indicator review time to maintain timely reporting.

Maintains and utilizes various database systems by:

  • Performing data entry of abstracted information.
  • Querying data from databases and preparing the data in spreadsheet and entering data into required databases (Get with the Guidelines Stroke).

Assists with quality improvement projects and focus studies within the Stroke Program by:

  • Abstracting information from the medical records.
  • Aiding with data entry and the preparation of related spreadsheets.

Acts as Liaison for Inpatient Neurology Rounding

  • Facilitates inpatient neurology rounding by working with on call neurologist. 
  • Moves tele-neurology cart to the patient's room. Assists with examinations of the patient as needed. 
  • Acting as a liaison between the neurologist and patient's primary care staff. 

Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:

  • Completing other job-related assignments and special projects as directed.
  • Participates in Stroke Program meetings as needed. 

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:

  • Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
  • Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established timeframes.
  • Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
  • Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
  • Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
  • Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
  • Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
  • Complies with established organization and department policies.
  • Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience:

  • The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent.  Course work in medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology (or other related medical areas) is highly desired. Medical terminology certification is desired. A minimum of three years of experience in a clinical setting (where data entry and data analysis skills were obtained) is desired.

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Requires a solid understanding of medical terminology, basic human anatomy and the information contained in a medical chart.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (i.e., data entry, word processing and spreadsheets) and familiarity with graphics software. Working knowledge of database applications is desired.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work effectively with minimal supervision and complete projects. Also requires planning, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication (both verbal and written) skills necessary to effectively communicate and maintain working relationships with other team members.

Working Conditions

  • Works in an office environment and in patient care areas. May be required to enter patient areas with possible exposure to biohazards. 
  • Must be effective in a quality-focused environment that frequently deals with important deadlines and schedules.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule. This is a daytime position 9:00 am � 5:00 pm, though hours may occasionally vary. Must be willing to work 4 weekend days per 6-week period, and two holidays per year. 

Physical Demands

  • Requires the physical ability and stamina (i.e., to walk or stand for prolonged periods of time, to reach/pull, bend, stoop, carry, and lift up to 20 pounds, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
  • Requires mobility to be able to move around the tele-neurology rounding cart.
