Assistant Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences

The Chemical Sciences Department at BSU is a close-knit community of students, teachers, mentors and scholars. We pride ourselves on small class sizes (capped at 32) and the individual attention that our students receive both in the classroom and the laboratory. Undergraduate research is an integral part of the program. Faculty members are actively engaged in collaborative research with students. This type of attention, which can be rare at the larger “research oriented” universities, provides our students with a learning environment that is unique among public institutions.

The department seeks a candidate who will have a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching in Analytical or Physical Chemistry and introductory Chemistry (lecture and laboratory). The successful candidate will teach lecture and laboratory courses in our Introductory Chemistry (CHEM 141/142, 131, 102) sequences and upper level Analytical or Physical Chemistry courses. Faculty members are expected to advise students, contribute service at the department, college and university levels as well as engage in ongoing scholarship and professional activity. Applicants should be strongly committed to excellence in teaching, social justice, mentoring, and to working in a multicultural environment that fosters diversity, equity, and inclusion. They should also have a commitment to public higher education, an ability to use technology effectively in teaching and learning, a commitment to collaboration, and evidence of scholarship activity.

Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Analytical or Physical chemistry or a closely related area is required by September 1, 2025.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior college level teaching experience is preferred, with preference given to candidates with a background in Analytical or Physical chemistry.
Preferred candidates will have a background in one or more of the following interdisciplinary sub-fields: Sustainable materials, green and sustainable chemistry, forensic chemistry, or computational chemistry.
Candidates with experience or interest in using engaged learning pedagogy and engaging students in research, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Pay is commensurate with education and experience.
