Recreation Superintendent

Annual Salary: $65,000 - $75,000

Position Summary:

The Recreation Superintendent is responsible for the coordination and development of all programming operations within park lands and other public recreation facilities throughout the City of Canton.  This position supervises all employees engaged in the operation of these programs and community centers.  He/she may serve as Recording Secretary for the Canton Board of Park Commissioners and other related duties in the absence of the Director.  Shall assist the Director in the Development of annual operation activities.  Shall work in tandem with the Parks Superintendent to assure that all maintenance needs for recreational programs and activities are appropriately scheduled and staffed.  Shall maintain regular communication with the front office staff to address all customer service issues pertaining to program and activities.  Shall work with the front office staff to facilitate all necessary purchasing needs for programs and activities.  Shall maintain regular communication with the front office staff to facilitate all necessary payroll and human resource functions for employees within his or her supervision.

This position will also be responsible for seeking estimates from third party vendors/contractors for programs that exceed the scope of services of park and recreation staff.  May also be required to coordinate and oversee said vendors/contractors through the duration of these projects. May assist in the preparation of issues related to collective bargaining negotiations.  May coordinate and plan activities with volunteer groups. May occasionally speak to various civic groups on park related topics.  Works to resolve complaints submitted to the Parks and Recreation office regarding program, activity and scheduling issues.   Addresses disciplinary issues and/or addresses grievances filed by Park and Recreation employees under his or her per the direction of the Director.  This position will also work in coordination on other projects as assigned by the Director.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Park, Recreation or Program Management (Baccalaureate degree preferred).  In lieu of a college degree, a minimum of five years of experience in recreational programming and/or community center management with three years of supervision experience would be considered.  Courses or experience in special event, public relations, marketing and/or athletics is highly desirable.  Possession of a valid Ohio Operator’s License is required.

Knowledge of program development and media relations.  Experience in working within, or supervising a unionized work force preferred.  This person should be skilled in public speaking record keeping report writing, and public relations.  Must be willing to attend various training sessions or schooling to maintain or improve his/her skills.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Supervision of all Park and Recreation programs, activities, and special events
  • Scheduling and supervision of programming and community center staff (approximately 8-10 FT / 30-50 PT or Contract Employees)
  • Scheduling and coordination of park facilities for rental and programming purposes

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products
  • Strong mathematical skills in relation to product and material estimations and measurements
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings, and special events as the schedule demands
  • Must successfully pass a background check, drug screening and must have a valid, current Ohio driver’s license

  • Must be able to read and write and have a good command of the English language

  • Physical capabilities – lifts 50 pounds, squat, bend and move as necessary for the job
  • Must be able to perform basic mathematics
  • Must have basic proficiency of Microsoft Excel and Work
  • Must possess valid Ohio Driver’s License
  • Must possess professional phone skills and work well with the public
  • Must present a neat and professional appearance
  • Responsible to follow policies and procedures of Canton Parks and Recreation and the City of Canton
