NCIS Summer 2025 Honors Internship
Within the Department of the Navy (DON), the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is
the civilian Federal law enforcement agency uniquely responsible for investigating felony crime, preventing terrorism, and protecting secrets for the Navy and Marine Corps. NCIS defeats threats from across the foreign intelligence, terrorist, and criminal spectrum by conducting operations and investigations ashore, afloat, and in cyberspace, to protect and preserve the superiority of the DON warfighter. NCIS relies on a highly skilled, diverse, and agile professional workforce to navigate a rapidly evolving threat landscape. Each of our positions—from Special Agents to intelligence analysts to human resources and beyond—plays a critical role in executing the NCIS Mission.
The position herein described performs standard administrative/program support functions at the assigned organizational level within the assigned NCIS directorate/field office. The incumbent works individually or as a team member in performing productive assignments of limited-to moderate difficulty to contribute to the substantive work of the unit/functional area.
II. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides Program Support (95%)
Performs many different kinds and combinations of support work in assigned program(s) at the assigned organizational level within the assigned NCIS directorate/field office. Performs the basic or recurring procedural tasks needed to complete program analysis/administration management projects and processes across diverse subjects/phases/issues. Examples:
Learns mission, functions and governing regulations-policies-procedures of assigned unit
and program area(s) and builds skills in program analysis support pertinent to the
assignment.
Enters, searches for, edits/corrects, extracts and, as authorized, modifies and otherwise
manipulates data and other information in various databases to produce charts and graphs or
monitor project or program status.
Makes and verifies calculations including baseline statistical data.
Compiles and distributes reports (created by others) for review and comment. May update,
modify or prepare basic, factual reports using information from various databases.
Maintains, compiles records of, or creates, organizational or programmatic workflow charts,
staffing levels and other mission/function-related information using office suite software.
May use specialized graphics software.
Reviews performance and management indicator reports, suggestions for program
improvements, and other similar management and program analysis documents
for appropriate format, distribution, and inclusion of required information.
Prepares charts, graphs, and narrative information for program analysis reports from
material provided by higher level employees.
Researches legal and regulatory material to obtain factual information and/or interpretation
for use by supervisor or staff members. Attends meetings and conferences to observe
proceedings.
Within the assigned basic project/program scope, assists in planning and organizing actions necessary to accomplish short- and mid-term program goals. Assists in the initiation of appropriate required actions such as requisitions, requests and reports.
Works closely with supervisor and other staff members to develop and solve problems/
issues; makes recommendations.
Assists supervisor or staff member in the preparation and presentation of information for
program and project matters. Calculates and compiles baseline statistical data (such as
measures of central tendency and dispersion), and may compile higher-level statistics, to
provide input for reports. May review narratives, charts and graphs before submission to
detect/correct/improve spelling-punctuation-grammar-clarity-conciseness-etc., and correct obvious factual errors.
Assists supervisor or staff members in conducting program functions. At supervisor’s
direction and with assistance from staff member(s), incumbent develops and coordinates a
variety of basic/routine reports, staff actions, correspondence, program briefings and other
related actions.
Other (5%)
Supervisor or staff member provides continuing assignments, indicating what is to be done, quantity/quality expected, deadlines and priority of work. Incumbent carries out recurring assignments using established procedures and standard methods of operation. Supervisor or staff member assures that finished work is accurate and complies with instructions. Uses modern office suite software, enterprise system software and special software to perform day-to-day business functions, run reports, research-analyze-plan and perform other program based and general administrative tasks.
