As a participant in the Co-op/Intern Professional Development Program, you will be cultivating professional skills and performing professional level work. You won’t just be sitting in meetings and shadowing all summer; you’ll be actively contributing and doing the same work as other FirstEnergy employees on your team. You’ll receive on-the-job training and challenging assignments. You will also be assigned a Supervisor, a Coach/Mentor and a dedicated IT Intern Program Coordinator to help you maximize your learning and growth throughout your summer… and beyond. Internships with FirstEnergy are full-time, paid opportunities spanning 14 weeks. You must be actively enrolled in an accredited university or college 

About Corporate Security at FirstEnergy 

The United States has 16 critical infrastructure sectors whose assets, systems, and networks—whether physical or virtual—are deemed so essential that their incapacitation or destruction would severely impact security, national economic security, public health, safety, or a combination of these areas. Almost every industry depends on electric power and fuels, making the protection of the energy infrastructure of vital importance. The Corporate Security group at FirstEnergy provides the operational and governance support necessary for that protection. Corporate Security professionals provide the expertise and skills that enhance and support the security for all FirstEnergy personnel, assets, and day-to-day operations. Available 24/7/365, FirstEnergy’s Corporate Security department is the company’s single point of contact for questions and issues related to physical security, including compliance with the NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) requirements.  

About the Physical Security Analyst 

The Physical Security Analyst Intern position at FirstEnergy will work with the Physical Security Field Support team to support the security best practices for FirstEnergy.  The intern will benefit from on-the-job training and mentoring through learning & assisting personnel by participating in a range of meetings, projects, and initiatives.  The intern will receive the opportunity to build professional relationships and enhance their interpersonal skills. This position’s base reporting location will be Reading, PA. The position can be worked primarily remotely with occasional work on-site.

Responsibilities of a Corporate Security Field Support Intern: 

  • Work with our Physical Security Field Support team in a variety of capacities responding to incidents, conducting investigations, and completing small projects
  • Provide weekly briefings on incidents, investigations, risk assessments, and inspections
  • Assist with improvements for security posture
  • Conduct research, analysis, report on improvements for the physical security incident, investigation, and assessment tracking software platform
  • Prepare briefing materials, presentations, and drafting summaries, as necessary
  • Utilizing your interpersonal and communication skills as a professional representative of Corporate Security
  • Work in conjunction with individuals on the team as well as other support teams & business partners to enforce and enhance security best practices
  • Complete projects as assigned

Applicant Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled, full time, in a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university/college with a major in Intelligence Management, Criminal Justice, Homeland Security, Criminology, Law Enforcement, Emergency Management, Criminal Psychology, Criminalistics, Forensic Science or related
  • Class Standing – Rising Senior
  • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must have the ability to work without sponsorship (now or in the future)

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Able to compose well-written, professional documents and reports with minimal editorial and proofing support
  • Highly motivated to work independently and productively and learn quickly
  • Proven team player, contributes to team goals, encourages, and supports team members
  • Teamwork, communication, and innovation are essential, as well as taking independent initiative on tasks to be completed.
  • The student may need to periodically operate their personal vehicle during their assignment; therefore, a valid driver's license and safe driving is required.

  • Understanding of Microsoft Office line of products, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
