Job Summary:
The Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management is seeking a combination position of an Assistant or Associate Professor: Applied Forest Geneticist and a Director for the Pacific Northwest Tree Improvement Research Cooperative (PNWTIRC ). The incumbent will hold two appointments, a 0.75 FTE , 12-month, tenure-track/tenured, Assistant or Associate Professor position, and a 0.25 FTE Director of PNWTIRC , a 12-month, professional faculty position, reflecting duties in both academic and administrative areas.
Appointment at the Assistant Professor rank is anticipated; however, appointment at a promoted rank may be considered depending upon the qualifications of the successful candidate
Oregon offers an exceptional opportunity for disciplinary leadership across a diverse range of forest environments. These forests are managed with varying objectives by forest industry, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), first nations, and family or nonindustrial owners. Examples include managing native species for intensive plantation production, conserving biodiversity, restoring forests, adapting to and mitigating the effects of climate change.
This position will support the teaching, research, and service missions of the Department of Forest Engineering, Resources, and Management (FERM ) and the College of Forestry (COF ) and lead the PNW Tree Improvement Research Cooperative (PNWTIRC ).
This position will conduct research, education, and outreach in the management of forest genetic resources with the goal of conserving forest resources, improving forest productivity, increasing the benefits from tree improvement programs, and enhancing the mass production of genetically improved materials. This position will advance fundamental knowledge critical to maintaining and improving forest productivity; develop tools to aid forest-based solutions for a changing climate; and support the viability of forests and the forest sector. Research and outreach will contribute to the development breeding, selection, and mass propagation of genetic material to enhance the health, resilience, and function of working forest landscapes, while also providing a variety of ecosystem services.
The incumbent will teach 1 undergraduate course in forest biology in addition to at least one graduate-level course in their area of expertise. As a member of the forestry and forest management faculty, the incumbent will be responsible for delivering quality instruction and helping to maintain accreditation by the Society of American Foresters (SAF ) for the Forestry undergraduate degree program.
This position will also provide administrative leadership for the Pacific Northwest Tree Improvement Research Cooperative (PNWTIRC ). The PNWTIRC is a 40+ year university/industry/agency research and outreach partnership focused on conducting research in support of operational tree improvement in the Pacific Northwest. Key Responsibilities

40% – Research/Scholarship:
Conduct research and scholarship in applied forest genetics. A portion of the incumbent’s research program will support the mission of the PNWTIRC , including research projects consistent with PNWTIRC research priorities. The incumbent will develop, manage, and maintain an active, externally funded program of nationally and internationally recognized research and scholarship. The incumbent will synthesize and communicate results of this research through outlets including refereed journals, books and book chapters, scientific meetings and professional workshops.
25% – Instruction/Teaching:
Teach 2-3 academic-quarter courses per year, including an undergraduate course in forest biology, and at least one graduate course focused in the incumbent’s area of expertise, which may include forest, population or quantitative genetics, functional genomics, seedling physiology or nursery management, between others. Teaching should contribute to equity, diversity, and inclusion efforts, such as: providing mentoring and opportunities for students from disadvantaged backgrounds; enabling the advancement of diverse perspectives; and promoting equitable outcomes for all learners. Teaching assignments may be adjusted to reflect the FERM Department’s or College of Forestry’s needs, including on-campus and online (e-campus) instruction. Recruit, supervise, support, mentor, and serve as major advisor for 2-4 MS or PhD students. Mentor undergraduate students and provide opportunities for their involvement in conducting research to help foster professional development and placement.
25% Research Administration:
Provide leadership for the PNWTIRC .
Administrative responsibilities include working in a collaborative, professional, and respectful manner with PNWTIRC members to set research priorities; managing cooperative personnel, budgets, member recruitment and retention, and annual reporting; conducting cooperative meetings; and disseminating information via appropriate outlets.
The research cooperative’s focus may evolve over time based on the mutual interests of members and the incumbent.
10% – Service:
Participate annually in departmental, college, and university-level affairs and governance, including leadership in curriculum and program development. Serve as a mentor to other faculty and staff in the department. Service is also expected in support of industry, academic organizations, facilitating student-industry interface and other professional groups and associations.
What You Will Need
• Completed Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in Forestry, Tree Improvement, Plant Genetics, or other closely related field and relevant experience to either Forestry or a plant breeding program.
• Life experience, training, or education that demonstrates a commitment to promoting the values and mission articulated in the College of Forestry’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity Strategic Plan.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills that enable collaboration with a broad spectrum of students, teachers, researchers, natural resource professionals, public officials, and external groups such as industry and family forest owners, tribes, and agencies.
• Demonstrated ability to teach courses in forest biology, forestry, and applied genetics and to mentor students.
• Research or project experience with interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary collaboration.
• Demonstrated ability to provide leadership in the development and implementation of research projects that benefit forest stakeholders in the PNW .
• Demonstrated experience with tree breeding programs or tree genetics research.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical transfer to a diverse audience.
• Demonstrated ability or potential to work with external groups.
• Demonstrated ability to engage others with respect, thoughtfulness, and good will.

Candidate should meet the OSU teaching, advising, research, and service criteria for appointment at the desired rank (see the OSU Faculty Handbook for details). OSU will consider previous years of experience at other, similar institutions towards timelines for rank or tenure promotions.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The ability to work in varied fields and weather conditions is required as needed; this includes extensive walking/hiking on uneven ground and uncomfortable site conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, wind, poison oak, heavy pollen counts). The position requires driving and travel to research sites, workshops, and conference venues.
