Job Summary:

This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Assistant Catering Manager position for University Housing and Dining Services at Oregon State University (OSU ). This is a full-time (1.00 FTE ), 12-month, professional faculty position.

University Catering offers inspired cuisine and exceptional service to campus students and guests. Dining Services focuses on local and sustainable ingredients, healthy food options and cooking from scratch. This is a year-round operation providing catering services both on and off campus. The University Catering operations team works in collaboration with kitchen personnel, venue management, and external clients to execute 10-40 catered events on a daily basis.

This position will provide leadership to the catering student employees and oversight of classified and student staff in completing daily events and objectives. This position will be responsible for a variety of administrative duties and logistical support to the catering manager and banquet manager. This position requires strong attention to detail, clear communication skills and maintaining execution and accountability for long and short-term goals. The dynamic nature of catering will require this position to occasionally have a varied schedule due to business needs, travel on and off campus to facilitate events and be active in both office settings and in the field. University Catering is a fast paced environment where sound decision making and sense of urgency are required. This is a team-oriented program and there will be occasions when it is necessary to support other events or areas beyond those assigned as a primary responsibility.

This position will work with the Dining Leadership team to ensure compliance with the policies and procedures in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA ) negotiated between Oregon State University and the SEIU /OPEU union.

What You Will Need

Requires Associate’s degree in Hospitality, Culinary or Food Service Management, Nutrition, Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Education; or a five-year equivalent combination of education and experience in these areas.

A minimum of three years of full-time work experience in a commercial food service operation such as a large commercial restaurant, hotel, catering, or institution.

A minimum of two years of supervisory experience in a commercial food service operation such as a large commercial restaurant, hotel, catering, or institution.

• Demonstrated experience as a trainer with the ability to develop and implement programs that teach others.
• Experience with lead work and training employees.
• Demonstrated hands-on management, working in a cooperative and supportive fashion with all staff, assisting as appropriate with identifying problems and creating solutions.
• Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
• Demonstrated ability to relate well to individuals and groups with widely varying backgrounds, perspectives, education and skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to provide outstanding customer service.
• Demonstrated organizational skills.
• Must have professional oral and written communication skill.
• Must have the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and make sound decisions.

• Must obtain an Oregon Food Handlers Certificate within 30 days of the hire date and maintain throughout employment with UHDS /OSU .
• Offers of employment will be contingent upon a satisfactory background check.
• Pursuant to UHDS policy, this position is required to maintain current CPR /AED certification within 90 days of employment, or when training becomes available.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have

• Experience within a college or university dining or catering setting.
• Working with a clientele that has various special diet needs.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, and an ability to learn new software.
• Working knowledge of ServeSafe principles; certification required within 90 days of employment.
• OLLC License for handling and serving alcohol.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

• Some work performed in an office setting
• May often deal with high noise levels due to nature of office space being in close proximity to catering production area and dish processing room.
• Required to work shift on your feet and perform frequent arm movements.
• The employee in this position will often be required to lift/carry/push/push/pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Must have the ability to make quick decisions under stress.
• UHDS dining operations run seven days per week, so weekends, evenings, and occasional holiday work will be required. OSU requires the ability to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the business.
• Good attendance is crucial for stability and day-to-day business needs. Must follow attendance schedule and break schedule, and must be on time and in uniform when shift begins.
• This position is deemed essential and the incumbent is expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
