Research Analyst - Air Warfare

While it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range, a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role is $112,924-$263,335.  Individual salary within this range will be commensurate with the incumbent’s experience, unique skills and qualifications, and other relevant factors.

Air Warfare Analyst – Operational Test and Evaluation

The Operational Evaluation Division (OED) has an immediate career opening for an Analyst to support the Department of Defense's assessment of the operational effectiveness, suitability, survivability, and lethality of Air Warfare-related Major Defense Acquisition Programs.  IDA takes great pride in the high caliber and timeliness of its analyses, which are produced in an atmosphere that encourages independent thinking and objective results.  Work at IDA is conducted in a team environment and often involves a multi-disciplinary approach.

Responsibilities:

The Analyst will support and advise mid- and senior-level civilian and military officials regarding the operational evaluation of airborne early warning, fighter, and bomber aircraft, and ground-based battle management systems.  The position involves analyzing the design, execution, and results of operational testing and associated modeling and simulation activity, and providing an independent assessment to Department of Defense’s Director, Operational Test and Evaluation.  Close interaction with officials responsible for the planning, development, and execution of tests is required.  Travel is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Educational Requirements:
    • PhD in Physics, Engineering (Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical), Chemistry (Theoretical, Nuclear, Physical), Applied Mathematics, Materials Science, Astronomy or...
    • PHD in a quantitative interdisciplinary program that encompasses one of those areas of focus coupled with 4+ years of operational or commercial experience or... 
    • Master’s degree in Physics, Engineering (Aeronautical, Mechanical, Electrical), Chemistry (Theoretical, Nuclear, Physical), Applied Mathematics, Materials Science, Astronomy, or a quantitative interdisciplinary program that encompasses one of those areas of focus coupled with 6+ years of operational or commercial experience.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated computational and data analysis skills.
  • Experience with military or civilian aircraft operations, acquisition, or testing is desired. 
  • Experience with advanced aviation technologies, such as low observable technologies, air-to-air and air-to-ground weaponry, advanced sensors, or data links, is desired.
  • Candidates selected will be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for obtaining a TS/SCI clearance.  Having a current TS/SCI is desired. 
  • Travel is required.

What are the next steps?

    1. A short screening call with IDA's Human Resources;
    2. A 30 – 60 minute screening call with IDA researchers; and
    3. Full day interview with various researchers and staff; includes giving an hour presentation on a research project.
  • Prior to the full day interview, you will be asked to provide:
    1. Transcripts (unofficial accepted);
    2. 3 contacts that are willing to write a letter of recommendation; and
    3. A writing sample.
