Educational Assistants/Part-Time: Educational Assistants are a vital asset for our educational program. Educational Assistants are expected to uphold and model the Catholic Identity of the school. Educational Assistants work for and take direction form the teacher(s) to whom they are assigned as well as Principal. It is essential the Educational Assistant and Classroom Teacher have open communication to identify tasks that need to be completed and what support “looks like” when providing student support.
Major Responsibilities and Regular Activities:
– Monitor hallways during class changes.
– Monitor bathroom areas during class times, as needed or directed by teacher.
– Monitor the students during lunch and recess. Remain with students throughout the entire lunch period.
– Ensure recess equipment is brought into the building.
– Walk students to and from Church – students may NOT transition between buildings without the assistant.
– Be available to pick up students if teachers are in a meeting or are called to watch students in another classroom.
– Use discretion when notifying a student that they are requested to go to the office or to see someone such as a Counselor.
– Be respectful when notifying teachers of office requests when it is necessary to interrupt instruction.
– Educational Assistants are privileged to confidential information about a student, the student’s family, or a situation that requires confidentiality. Staff members entrusted with this knowledge must be ethical and professional. It is important that this information be held in confidence. Breaches of confidentiality are subject to consequences up to and including termination.
– Other duties as assigned by the Principal.
– Take initiative to complete tasks, such as the following times: when they see a blank bulletin board, when forms/fees are being collected or when an assignment has been given that could be graded by an Assistant and after teachers have discussed ways the Assistant can assist students in class.
– Other duties as assigned by the Principal and/or class teacher.
Tasks Education Assistants may be asked to complete:
– Provide accommodations, such as small group testing (per Service Plan)
– Hang and take down hallway displays and lettering
– Grade objective assessments (i.e. true/false, multiple choice, matching, etc.)
– Pass out or return papers to students
– Assist teachers with paperwork, as requested
– Maintain and collect data, as requested
– Work with a small group of students after being given direction form the class teacher
Skills, Knowledges and/or Abilities:
– Must be able to stand, sit and walk for extended periods
– Must be able to lift and carry twenty-five (25) pounds on an occasional basis
– Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with students, teachers, and parents
– Must be able to use a personal computer, telephone and other office equipment
– Must be able to bend and reach as necessary
Education, Training and/or Experience
– Past work experience in an educational setting preferred
