Police Officer

Certified Officers (SPO qualified) starting annual pay is $84,342 with top out of $110,178 in four years.

New Officers starting annual pay is $78,624 with bi-annual step increases. Officers with two years’ time in service and 60 college credits will be promoted to Senior Police Officer and commensurate pay increase.

Every officer starts with 120 hours of vacation, 12 paid holidays and 12 sick days per year.

The Des Moines Police Department is the largest and only self-sustained police department in the state of Iowa, consisting of 375 sworn officers and 104 civilian support staff providing professional, efficient police service to those living in and visiting our award-winning city. The department offers a wide variety of job assignments throughout the Operations, Administrative Services and Investigations Divisions including but not limited to: Patrol, Community Outreach, K-9, Special Tactics and Response, Robbery and Homicide Investigation, Financial Crimes Investigation, Family Conflict, Narcotic Investigations, Bomb Squad, Dive Team etc.…

The Des Moines Police Department typically hires 20-25 recruits for each academy class. Every DMPD officer is trained at the Des Moines Regional Police Academy. The basic academy is 24 weeks in length and produces the highest quality officers in the state of Iowa.

Extending over 80 square miles, Des Moines is home to over 212,000 people and the central city of a metropolitan area of approximately 634,000.  Des Moines is a vibrant city, intersected by the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers.  Des Moines is the capital city and is the commercial, financial, transportation, and governmental hub of Iowa.
