SUPERVISION NEEDED FOR JOB
Duties will be performed under the general supervision of a Student Services Supervisor and classroom teacher.
QUALIFICATIONS
· High School Diploma
· ODE License for Educational Aide (can obtain as part of the onboarding process)
JOB SUMMARY
Under guidance and direction of the classroom teacher, the Instructional Assistant assists the teacher in implementing the daily educational program for students with disabilities..
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
· Assist the classroom teacher in implementing the educational program for students with disabilities in accordance with their IEP; assist the classroom teacher in adapting curriculum and instructional strategies to the needs of individual students
· Maintain clear and complete communication with teacher of record to ensure effective implementation of the student’s educational plan
· Assist teacher with documentation requirements including collecting data to monitor student progress
· Assist students in completing tasks related to the educational program
· Assist classroom teacher with classroom management
· Assist students with behavior management skills
· Assist with crisis intervention when needed
· Assist teacher and students with tasks related to daily activities (e.g. lunch and/or recess duty, helping load and unload buses,
· Supervise students during short-term absences of teacher from the classroom or in non-classroom settings (e.g. restrooms, cafeterias, corridors)
· Assist teacher with routine clerical tasks and maintenance of classroom
· Maintain accurate and complete student records; prepare and submit all required reports on time.
· Assist in lifting and positioning students, diapering, changing clothes, feeding, G-tube feeding, and other care giving activities as needed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
· Seek opportunities to improve skills and grow professionally; attend all required meetings and in-services.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
• Knowledge of classroom management techniques
• Knowledge of CPI
• Knowledge of CPR and First Aid
• Ability to recognize and react appropriately to individual needs of students
• Ability to establish effective relationships with students with a wide range of physical and intellectual capabilities
• Ability to deal effectively with student behavior problems
• Ability to restrain students over 150 lbs.
• Ability to use technology as both a productivity tool and as a method of communication; proficient in computer applications (e.g. Microsoft Office, Google Docs)
• Ability to maintain accurate student records
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with FERPA requirements
• Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, co-workers, administrators, and public
• Ability to work with team to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate program progress and implement changes
• Ability to model ethical principles and democratic ideals for students and the community
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to :
· Stand for periods of time, move around the work site, move from one work site to another, sit at a desk
· Stoop, kneel or crouch to assist students
· Occasionally lift and/or move materials up to fifty pounds
· Communicate with internal and external stakeholders by talking and listening
· Operate a computer and other technology devices
· Read and analyze data (close visual acuity)
WORK ENVIRONMENT
· Noise level may escalate in group or event settings.
· May include exposure to disease and infections.
· May be required to deal with students with behavioral risks
· Involves stress as a result of the responsibility to ensure that laws, regulations and procedural rules are followed, the responsibility of dealing with individual student concerns and maintaining student discipline, and the demands of maintaining effective communication with other staff members, students and parents.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
· Remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment at the ESC of Lake Erie West
· Complete a satisfactory background check
· Possess a valid driver’s license or have transportation
· Review the ESC Staff Handbook as well as Board Policy to understand job expectations
