Quality and Weld Trainer

 

Summary: The Quality & Weld Trainer will be responsible for performing both hands-on and classroom training of all welders, covering the entire product line's diversity. This position requires a Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) license in good standing to train and certify current and new welders. Formal CWI training at an established program, along with onsite training, is required. The trainer must create, develop, and maintain both technical presentations and the associated Welder Training Database. Additionally, specialty production welding and technical welding support for Ohio Gratings and outside distributors are expected. This individual will also support the Engineering & Estimating Department as needed. The trainer must be knowledgeable of and implement NAAMM standards. If not already a CWI, the trainer must study for and pass the CWI exam within the first year of employment. Certified welding inspectors play an integral role in the welding industry by ensuring every weld examined is of high quality, effective, and meets safety regulations.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Train incoming and current Ohio Gratings associates on proper SOPs to complete job processes.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of WPSs and other auditable fabrication standards.
  • Gain knowledge of galvanizing quality, on-grip process, and quality, as well as acceptable manufacturing standards through onsite training.
  • Serve as an auditor to ensure and maintain compliance with fabrication standards.
  • Work with product development and manufacturing teams to ensure manufacturability of new and existing product lines.
  • Read job travelers to ensure quantity, grating type, material type, finish, and any special quality notes are accurate.
  • Train incoming high school students on Ohio Gratings welding standards and procedures.
  • Ensure all associates are trained/certified (if required) to perform the tasks they are assigned.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining training materials as required.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement activities to enhance key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Contribute to idea generation for improving output or efficiency to meet or exceed standards.
  • Embrace the 5S methodology to build and maintain a quality work environment.
  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, ERP, and productivity.
    Create, develop, and maintain both technical presentations and the associated Welder Training Database.
  • Provide specialty production welding and technical welding support to both Ohio Gratings and outside distributors.
  • Develop, maintain, and revise training documentation, records, training database, and procedures as necessary to comply with industry and customer requirements.
  • Ensure weld processes and procedures meet regulatory and customer standards.
  • Enforce quality as a key element of customer satisfaction.
  • Train employees on welding safety practices and ensure adherence to safety policies.
  • Support production welding and manufacturing as required.
  • Evaluate and communicate results of tread or other specialty weld tests.
  • Perform QCHECKs in the Business Unit with student welders and new hires.
  • Inspect output samples using industry-appropriate methods, such as comparing to standards, measuring dimensions, and examining functionality.
  • Use gauges (e.g., tape measure, calipers, micrometers) to measure products and ensure quality.
  • Review blueprints and specifications to compare to produced goods.
  • Ensure the production line adheres to standards and procedures and complies with customer standards.
  • Implement NAAMM standards.
  • Understand the IRR process and update IRR process documents as changes occur.
  • Review sales order packets using the five-point checklist application.
  • Back up Quality Assurance as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Education, Work Experience, and Proficiencies:

  • Successful completion of an AWS-approved CWI trainee course required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Post-secondary education in a scientific field preferred; technical welding school preferred.
  • ASME Section IX certified welder.
  • AWS CWI preferred.
  • Expertise in GTAW and GMAW with carbon, stainless, and nickel-based alloys.
  • Proficient in blueprint reading and welding symbols.
  • Familiarity with the entire company product line.
  • Understanding of standard tools, materials, and practices in the welding industry.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a MIG/TIG Fabricator preferred.
  • Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • 3-5 years of experience in a metal manufacturing facility with knowledge of galvanizing quality, on-grip process, and acceptable manufacturing standards.
  • Excellent reasoning skills, detail-oriented, accurate, and able to complete assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Initiative and self-starter.
  • Experience with ERP systems and knowledge of internal processes and procedures preferred.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, bend, reach, push, and pull. The employee must frequently lift pieces weighing up to 45 pounds and use material handling equipment for pieces weighing more than 45 pounds.

Work Environment:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the essential duties, the employee will regularly work on the production floor. The work environment requires the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Exposure to noise, dust, heat, and cold is regular, and attention to safety rules and standards is required due to machine and tool hazards.
