Project Accountant Role

SN is helping our award-winning client, Niles Bolton Associates, expand their Financial Team with a Project Accountant. In this role, individual is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects, investigating variances, approving expenses, and ensuring that project billings are issued to customers and payments collected. Highly interactive team role with internal and external client facing functions around driving process improvements. Candidate will be comfortable in advocating for payments weaving collections into routine practices. Prior experience in the AEC space is a plus enabling you to bring your skills quickly to task. Position is based out of their Atlanta, GA office.

What you get to do in this role:

  • Effectively communicate with Project Managers (PM) and Principals-in-Charge (PIC), regarding contract documents, change orders and other contract modifications, approvals, and any additional services related to billing.
  • Review and post all consultant invoices.
  • Prepare draft and final invoices for all billable projects, including all applicable backup and send to client.
  • Assess and pursue opportunities for maximization of client billing; communicate with the Controller as to observations and actions taken.
  • Research any unbilled issues to optimize the billing possibilities for the billing period.
  • Prepare and enter journal entries as needed.
  • Post cash receipts and deposit funds electronically.
  • Set up new projects, inactivate completed projects, make transfers of employee billable hours and/or expenses, and open and close time classes in company system.
  • Send past due statements, follow up with client for collections of past due invoices; write off any uncollectible receivables, labor, or expenses, as directed by the PIC.
  • Collaborate with PICs, PMs and Controller on resource planning and project budgeting.
  • Generate and distribute monthly receivables reports, budget vs actual reports and profitability reports.
  • Prepare special project analyses for the PICs, PMs and others.
  • Review financial data on contracts and proposals prior to final approval.
  • Provide year-end support of auditor requirements, which may include research and reconciliation.
  • Recommend and implement agreed process improvements.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed by the Controller.

  • Thorough knowledge of standard contract terms, including hourly, lumps sum, not-to-exceed and how they are applied in the billing process.
  • Knowledge of the project structure in a client/consultant business environment.
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees.
  • Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organizations accounting system.

How to boost success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent years of experience.
  • A minimum of three years of project accountant experience preferred.
  • Deltek Vantagepoint or Vision experience preferred.
