Fall Co-op/CIVM-Biology

Department Description:

We are seeking a motivated, creative, and meticulous bench scientist with a track record or interest in developing Complex In Vitro Models. The candidate would join the Complex In Vitro Models (CIVM) team within Target Discovery department in GSK’s research organization. CIVM’s mission is to improve predictive and translational value of preclinical models. We strive to improve models to understand mechanism of action, efficacy, safety and metabolism, aiming to assess these in the same systems whenever possible, and ultimately to use these systems to refine, reduce, and replace animal models.

The CIVM group engages in dynamic, matrixed collaborative projects across therapeutic areas and other Research technologies platform groups. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and validating immune-competent, translational Complex in Vitro Models.

Job Description:

  • Development and functional interrogation of complex in vitro assays including 3D organoids and microphysiological systems for immunology, oncology, liver, kidney and/or gut models.
  • Work in a matrix team environment to ensure optimal delivery of project and department objectives to the highest possible scientific standard
  • Independently design project proposals with clear experimental design and rationale. Execute laboratory experiments, apply advanced data analysis, integration and interpretation with an emphasis on providing appropriate context for data and experiments in order to progress programs and/or develop platforms. Present data and results in a timely manner to project teams.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a Master's or PhD degree in Biology, Bioengineering, or similar disciplines.
  • Must be able to work full-time (35-40 hours/week) throughout the 6 month co-op (September 2024~March 2025).
  • Must have an active student status and/or within 12 months post-graduation from a BS or MS degree program. Post-doctoral candidates are not eligible.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with culturing and maintaining Primary human cells, iPSCs and patient derived  3D organoids, Experience working with microphysiological model systems
  • Experience in using cell and molecular biology tools and subsequent data analysis (e.g Flow cytometry, MSD cytokine analysis, ELISA)
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Office suite

Candidates who are hired for an on-site role or hybrid role, and reside outside of 50-miles from their assigned work location, are eligible for relocation stipend. This is a one-time payment to help offset housing & relocation expenses. Please refer to the position details for the requirements of each position.
