Morro Bay State Park is seeking a State Park Interpreter I (PI) to serve as the digital access coordinator for the Morro Bay Museum of Natural History. The reporting location is 20 State Park Rd, Morro Bay, CA 93442. This position will work under the direction of the State Park Interpreter III.   

The State Park Interpreter I (PI) will facilitate K-12 interpretive experiences (both in-person and virtual) at the MBMNH while supporting a variety of museum programs: develop high-quality, thematic presentations for K-12 education students, deliver live interactive programs via distance learning tools, coordinate and schedule museum programs, manage Virtual Reality goggles, collaborate with staff on collections and exhibit projects, and lead a team of seasonal visitor services employees. This position will be required to assist with general museum operations such as operating a cash register, greeting visitors, answering visitor inquiries, and managing register funds. Additional duties are assigned as needed.

The working days for this position are Wednesday - Saturday or Sunday - Wednesday (24-32 hours per week).This position may work up to 1500 hours per calendar year. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, holidays, and weekends as required. This position will be responsible for complying with the department uniform standards and as an employee of California State Parks, the incumbent shall adhere to the department performance standards.

This position requires a valid Class C driver’s license. You must answer the questions addressing your driver’s license on your application. Ensure you provide your driver’s license number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements and/or restrictions on your application.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.

This position is designed to as not telework eligible.
 

Duties

  • Develop high-quality, thematic presentations aligned to academic standards for K-12 education students. 
  • Deliver live, interactive online programs via distance learning tools and platforms for individual classrooms as well as broadcast-style presentations for larger audiences and the online public.
  • Coordinate with established partners to offer teacher & educator workshops based on environmental curriculum.
  • Increase accessibility by coordinating blended access opportunities and promoting free, grant-funded bus transportation for K-12 students via our non-profit partner. Keep accurate records, input data, prepare reports and present findings.
  • Manage 30 Oculus virtual reality (VR) goggles to facilitate in-person “open-house” VR experiences at the museum for the public and school group rotations.

Qualifications:

  • One year of experience in research and development of historical or natural resource interpretive programs.
  • Equivalent to graduation from college with major work in interpretation, social sciences, natural sciences, communications, or closely related fields. (Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for up to two years of the required education on a year- for-year basis).
