Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen

The Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Policy Unit Planner (Environmental Planner 3) position. This position will be located in our Headquarters Office (HQ) in Lacey, WA. Upon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.

The Model Toxics Control Act (MTCA), Washington’s cleanup law, is the engine that powers our work to improve Washington’s environment, economy, and quality of life – providing funding to clean up hazardous waste sites and properly dispose of the waste. To accomplish this work, Washington voters authorized a tax on hazardous materials. As the Policy Unit Planner, you will lead the development of two significant reports to the Washington State Legislature and the public, one of which accounts for expenditures from MTCA to conduct remedial actions on hazardous sites, and the other a comprehensive report completed in coordination with local governments with clean-up responsibilities. You will manage the preparation of these documents, provide technical editing support for the development of other policy and guidance documents, as well as communicate and engage with the public to promote awareness and understanding, as well as foster involvement in TCP regulatory initiatives.

The mission of the Toxics Cleanup Program (TCP) is to protect Washington’s human health and the environment by preventing and cleaning up pollution and supporting sustainable communities and natural resources for the benefit of future and current generations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:

  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent

Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.

Option 1:

  • A Bachelor’s degree with major emphasis in land use, urban, regional, environmental, cultural, or natural resource planning, landscape architecture, geography, land use or environmental law, public administration with an environmental emphasis, environmental policy, environmental studies, social sciences – such as anthropology or sociology, or closely related field, AND
