U240034 - Staff Writer - Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

Position Summary:   

The Office of Communications at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo is searching for a detail-oriented and talented communications professional to join our team as a Staff Writer. Reporting to the Director of Communications, the Staff Writer will play a pivotal role in raising the public profile of the Jacobs School. The ideal candidate is curious, thoughtful, and possesses strong writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to craft compelling content for diverse materials and audiences. The candidate should have strong news judgement, be adept at synthesizing data and complex concepts into digestible content for a sophisticated general audience; and cultivating and maintaining relationships with faculty, staff, administration, students and residents.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

  • Collaborate with Jacobs School and University Communications leadership to develop content that promotes the clinical, research and educational activities of the Jacobs School community and elevates the school’s brand.
  • Interview faculty, staff, trainees, and students about their work and post stories on the Jacobs School website.
  • Write and edit content for the Jacobs School website to attract prospective medical students, faculty, residents and fellows.
  • Edit other writers’ copy for grammar, content, and to ensure it has the proper tone to meet the intended audience.
  • Cover key Jacobs School events, including the annual Commencement and White Coat ceremonies.
  • Collaborate with other medical school and university writers, photographers, and social media staff to elevate Jacobs School stories.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of experience in journalism, communications, public relations or relevant field.
  • Outstanding writing, editing and general communications skills; able to recast stories for target audiences.
  • Knowledge and mastery of Associated Press style.
  • Self-starter; creative and organized with strong project management skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Available for occasional evenings and weekends to cover school-based activities and events.
  • Able to collaborate easily with faculty, staff, JSMBS leadership and students.
  • Familiarity working with/in a web content management system.

 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in health care or a higher education environment.
  • Interest in emerging communications technologies/changing media landscape.
  • Basic graphic design, photography and visual media skills.
  • Familiarity with Marketing Cloud/Salesforce is a plus.
