Staff Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY

The responsibilities of this position include the recording, analysis, and reporting of financial data and the preparation of key general ledger account reconciliations. The employee works under the general supervision of the Financial Accounting Manager and supports the work of the Finance Department. This position requires the ability to analyze complex financial issues and determine the appropriate solutions.  Work requires independent judgment, attention to detail, consistency, and is confidential in nature.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Assist with maintaining the general and subsidiary ledgers and journals, which includes preparing journal entries and account reconciliations.  Assist with preparing year-end reconciliations and schedules for the annual audit.  30%
• Collaborate with other City departments on grant reporting and requirements. 20%
• Perform routine duties occurring monthly, quarterly or annually including, but not limited to, governmental reporting to state and federal entities and remitting sales tax.  Update Tax Increment Financing Districts (TID) projections and complete and file the annual TID reports. 20%
• Serve as a resource and financial expert to departmental staff, new employees, and end users. Help answer software and general accounting questions within the Finance department and other departments within the City.  20%
• Assist the Finance management team with projects. 10%
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field OR
• Associate’s Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field combined with three (3) or more years of progressively responsible professional experience in financial analysis or accounting.
• CPA license or ability to obtain is preferred. 
• Experience with Governmental Fund Accounting is preferred.
