Director of Alaska Technical Center

QUALIFICATIONS: 

1. Alaska Type B certificate preferred. Bachelor's degree required, Master's degree preferred. 

2.Minimum of five (5) years in educational leadership roles, preferably in vocational or technical education settings; Northwest Arctic/Rural Alaskan experience preferred.  

3. Experience and knowledge of program supervision, public relations, grants and budget preparations, fiscal responsibility, business planning, marketing, understanding of secondary and postsecondary students enrolled in career technical courses, leadership skills, and workforce development. 

4. Experience is building State, regional, local partnerships. 

5. Demonstrated knowledge of vocational training programs, curriculum development, and educational best practices; Strong understanding of state and federal regulations governing vocational education, including WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) and CTE (Career and Technical Education) guidelines  

6. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills 

7. Demonstrated ability to work positively in multilingual/multicultural environment required.

8.  Ability to work, live and travel in a remote area of western Alaska. 

9. Progressive professional attitude: the ability to accept and implement the educational change required. 

10. Proven track record of effective team management, budget oversight, and resource allocation 11. Experience with strategic planning, program assessment, and continuous improvement processes 12. Ability to work and contribute as a member of a management team required. 

REPORTS TO: Superintendent 

SUPERVISES: Asst. Director ATC/STAR and ATC/STAR personnel 

JOB GOAL: The Director of the Alaska Technical Center (ATC) and STAR of the NW Magnet School oversees the strategic direction, operations, and administration of both facilities. This dual-role position requires strong leadership, exceptional organizational skills, and a commitment to providing high-quality vocational and academic education to adult and secondary students. The Director is responsible for fostering a positive learning environment, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations, and promoting collaboration between staff, students, parents, and community stakeholders. Wrap-around services play a crucial role in residential secondary and post-secondary vocational training facilities by addressing the multifaceted needs of students, including academic, social, emotional, and practical support, thereby promoting holistic development and success. The successful candidate will demonstrate experience in providing these services. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: 

1. Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for the Alaska Technical Center and STAR of the NW Magnet School, aligning programs with the mission and goals of both facilities. 

2. Oversee all aspects of facility operations, including budget development, fiscal management, staffing, and facilities maintenance; Advise and assist in obtaining state and federal grants for career and technical education programs. 

3. Collaborate with staff to develop and implement innovative vocational and academic curricula that meet the needs of diverse student populations preparing them for success; Arrange and direct in-service education for the staff. 

4. Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, and industry requirements related to vocational education and secondary schooling.  

5. Foster a culture of excellence, inclusivity, and student success by promoting professional development opportunities, recognizing achievements, and providing support to staff and students.  

6. Create an enabling environment where students can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially, enhancing their overall well-being and increasing their chances of achieving long-term success in their chosen career pathways. 

7. Provide comprehensive wrap-around services such as counseling, tutoring, career guidance, and life skills training 

8. Build and maintain positive relationships with community partners, industry stakeholders, and educational institutions to enhance opportunities for internships, apprenticeships, and workforce development initiatives. 

9. Regularly assess program effectiveness, student outcomes, and stakeholder satisfaction through data analysis, student surveys, and performance evaluations, implementing improvements as needed. 

10. Represent the Alaska Technical Center and STAR of the NW Magnet School at local, regional, and state-level meetings, conferences, and events, promoting the mission and achievements of both facilities. 

11. Uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, and integrity in all interactions and decision-making processes, fostering a culture of trust and accountability within the organization. 

12. Collaborate with industry partners, community, state agencies, area businesses, industries, and labor organizations to ensure 

training is aligned with and stays current with industry needs and standards. 

13. Inform the public on programs available through the ATC and STAR Magnet School 

14. Supervise all Alaska Technical Center and STAR of the NW employees and review all evaluations of personnel in the career and technical education program. 

15. Make recommendations for long-term adjustments, changes, additions, and deletions in the career and technical education program to meet changing job trends and labor market needs. 

16. Prepare and submit to the advisory board recommendations relative to all matters requiring advisory board actions, placing before the Board such necessary and helpful facts, information, and reports needed to ensure the making of informed decisions. 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 261-day work year, 7.5 hrs. per day. Position begins July 1,2024. Salary as established by the Board of Education. 

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
