Position: Scientist I

 

Department: WIPP Laboratories (Carlsbad, NM)

 

LATA is currently searching for a Scientist I for the project in Carlsbad, New Mexico. This is a government contract to the US Department of Energy (DOE) supporting the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP). As leaders in project excellence, LATA has over four decades of proven success in global and domestic markets as a small business specializing in federal government contracting. 

 

Located at the Carlsbad Environmental Monitoring and Research Center, WIPP Laboratories is a part of LATA, mandated to perform the radiochemical analyses of environmental, air monitoring, and bioassay samples provided by various departments within the WIPP Site. 

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Chemical processing of samples, involving handling of large quantities of hazardous acids, chemicals, and radioactive material at elevated temperatures.
  • Preparation of stock solutions and reagents for various laboratory processes.
  • Receiving laboratory samples from clients and completing the corresponding paperwork.
  • Maintain laboratory notebooks ensuring the remain updated and accurate
  • Coordinate with other personnel to maintain quality assurance requirements in the laboratory.
  • Perform chemical and supplies inventory.
  • Laboratory housekeeping.
  • Data validation and verification.
  • Administration of WIPP Labs controlled software and databases, including administer user accounts/login, maintain controlled software paperwork up to date, be actively involved in the implementation of a Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Maintain good standing in all training qualifications for WIPP and LATA.
  • Other duties as assigned to support the WIPP Laboratories mission.

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or related major with 0-2 years of laboratory experience
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Detail-oriented with neat data recording skills.
  • Capacity to prioritize and multitask
  • Must be able to work individually and as a member of a team
  • Capable of following written technical laboratory procedures
  • Initiative-taking personality
  • Due to the nature of the work, candidate must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Familiarity with the use and handling of radioactive material
  • Proficiency with quality assurance and quality control requirements
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze radioanalytical data
