Attorney - Criminal Division

The Saint Paul City Attorney's Office Criminal Division currently has 2 vacancies for a provisional Attorney. Starting salary for these positions is dependent on qualifications. Please note: These positions are grant funded with employment duration through December 31, 2025. 

Positions in this class perform a variety of professional legal work at the intermediate to full performance level in the Saint Paul City Attorney’s Office. Criminal Division attorneys handle high-volumes of a variety of criminal cases from charging through appeal.
 
General Description of Duties:
These positions will involve prosecuting individuals charged with petty misdemeanor, misdemeanor, and gross misdemeanor offenses. Typical work performed includes:
 

  • Screening of cases for criminal charges by reviewing and evaluating reports from law enforcement, assessing evidentiary issues and the merits of cases, and recommending approval of or declining of charges.
  • Representing the City by preparing for and making appearances at arraignments, pretrial hearings, trials, sentencing, and other court proceedings; keeping affected parties informed as to case status; negotiating resolution of cases, and recommending disposition of cases.
  • Drafting, filing, and/or submitting criminal complaints, memoranda, discovery requests, appeals, proposed court orders, pleadings, motions, letters and other legal documents.

 Position Requirements:

Candidates for positions as an Attorney will have at least a Juris Doctorate Degree, a license to practice law from the Supreme Court of the State of Minnesota, and at least three years of experience practicing law as an Attorney at the entry to intermediate level with the City of Saint Paul or equivalent.

Preferred candidates will have at least 3 years of experience as an Attorney in the practice of criminal law.

Continued employment as an Attorney is contingent upon maintaining such licensure.
