Special Uses Intern

Introduction 

This position functions as a trainee/intern on the National Forests in Florida with the Lands and Realty Staff. As a trainee, the employee performs basic duties and receives training pertaining to Lands, Special Uses, and Recreation.

Major Duties 

As a trainee, performs a variety of clearly defined tasks designed to increase the incumbent's knowledge and understanding of the functions of Lands, Special Uses, Recreation Special Uses, and SUDS and other applications. Assignments may be similar to those assigned to clerical or technical employees, but such tasks are primarily for training purposes, or to relieve higher grade employees of routine work.

Receives formal and on-the-job instructions and training, designed to familiarize the incumbent with functions and operations of the organization, and to provide experience in the practical application of laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures involved in appraisal work.

Assignments may include some or all of the following:

  • Digitizing various files throughout the division.
  • Completing/adhering to the naming conventions and filing in accordance.
  • Ensuring permits are administered to Standard by completing a myriad of related tasks including but not limited to inspections of roads, concession recreation areas, monitoring progress of GT projects, relaying information to specialists, composing letters to permit holders, compiling information to support requests to the Regional Office, etc.
  • Compiles specific data as a basis for the special use applications and uses.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Preferred Skills

  • Basic knowledge of commonly applied best practices, principles, and methodologies to complete trainee assignments.
  • Critical thinking skills to assess scenarios requiring managerial oversight vs scenarios where employees have the ability to decision make.
  • Computer skills including Microsoft suite experience and basic computer navigation skills.
  • The ability to adapt to changing priorities.

Qualifications: 

  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents over 17 years old.
  • Preference is given to individuals enrolled in institutions of higher education, especially minority-serving institutions.
