Position Title: Garden & Nutrition Coordinator

Host site: Edgewood Village Network Center

Position Type: Quarter Time 450 hour/year

Dates of Service: April 22nd – August 23rd 2024

Position Description:
Organization Information: Edgewood Village is a nonprofit housing corporation that provides safe, high quality, affordable housing and facilities for low income, disabled, or senior individuals and families and organize social,
recreational, commercial, leadership, and educational opportunities to improve the communal quality of life for Edgewood Village and its residents. Edgewood’s community gardens were created in 2011 to provide resident
allotment plots increasing access to fresh, free, produce to resident gardeners. With the support of AmeriCorps Members Edgewood Village Community Garden has expanded programming to include service and programming
opportunities for residents and partners, gardening assistance, nutrition education, garden education, food distribution and referrals to other food programs.

Role and Responsibilities:

Member will support Edgewood Village’s mission to improve the communal quality of life for its residents through efforts in the following areas: community garden management, gardening education, volunteer management and food distribution. Responsibilities will include:

  • Provide Edgewood Village Community Garden participants with support by assisting in the management of resident and donation garden plots.
  • Coordinate and manage garden and nutrition education opportunities for Edgewood Village participants. Coordinate and manage volunteer opportunities for residents and community partners.
  • Provide support to the Edgewood staff to maintain and expand its current food distribution program.
  • Collaborate with staff, residents, and community partners to create and maintain sustainable programming. Promote programming through creation and distribution of print and digital materials.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and supervisor meetings as well as meetings relevant to the AmeriCorps Program. Additional tasks as asked by supervisor and/or the AmeriCorps Program
  • Participate in the AmeriCorps Program’s and Edgewood Villages’ data collection & analysis.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Be at least 17 years of age. Minors must have guardian permission. Applicants must have HS diploma, GED or working toward the completion of one.
  • U.S. citizen, U.S. national or lawful permanent resident of the U.S.
  • Agree to and pass the following checks: State of Michigan background check, DHS Central Registry Clearance, FBI Fingerprinting, and State & National Sex Offender Registry
  • Ability to do hard physical labor; bending, lifting, use of garden tools, etc.

Preferred Skills:

  • Willingness and interest in working with a very diverse population while modeling patience, kindness, flexibility, respect and maintain privacy to those we are assisting in the community.
  • Some knowledge of gardening/farming or cooking healthy foods is a plus.
  • Computer proficiency, specifically with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Flexible in nature and well organized/efficient with time and schedule.
  • Driver’s license and vehicle preferred.

Compensation:
Members will receive an annual living allowance of $5291 distributed bi-weekly from April 22nd, 2024 – August 23rd, 2024 and receive student loan forbearance for qualified loans and continual professional development. Upon successful completion of service an education award in the amount of $1956.35 will be issued. Members will serve a minimum of 25 hours/week. All interested candidates must be available to spend 6-8 hours in training the week of April 22nd and submit a cover letter and resume to ICHD AmeriCorps Program staff by April 12th at 5pm.
