Housing Program Coordinator

The Housing Program Coordinator plans for, coordinates resources for, and develops initiatives to improve the quantity and quality of the housing supply in the City. This position prepares and administers grants related to housing, historic preservation, homelessness prevention and similar functions. This position also facilitates strengthening neighborhoods and public engagement. The Housing Program Coordinator provides primary staff support for the Housing Commission and the Land Bank Board of Trustees.

A Day in the Life

  • Conducts research, compiles information and interprets data related to housing activities, neighborhood programs and comprehensive planning. Reviews, writes and administers grants in the fields of housing, historic preservation and similar community improvement areas. Prepares and manages consultant contracts. Solicits support for the Housing Trust Fund through active recruitment measures.
  • Develops and directs community initiatives to improve the quality of life in Hutchinson, including neighborhood development, healthy communities and public amenities, and develops and facilitates strategies for neighborhood redevelopment and improvement.
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with other agencies and groups to exchange information and serve as a resource for housing and community development programs, policies, and procedures. Communicates with and assists citizens and neighborhoods in accessing programs and services for improving housing and neighborhood conditions.
  • Prepares and reviews reports for and provides staff support to the Housing Commission and Land Bank Board of Trustees. Provides secondary support for the Community Improvement Commission. Prepares reports for and makes occasional presentations to the City Council.
  • Performs advanced planning functions, including preparation of comprehensive plan elements for housing and neighborhood development.
  • Assists the Director of Planning and Development with budget preparation and management.

What You Will Need to be Successful:

Education: A Bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, community development, business or public administration or a related field is required; a Master's degree is preferred.

Experience: A minimum of one year of increasingly responsible similar or related experience is required. Preference will be given to candidates holding an advanced degree and with experience in the planning, housing, or community development field.
