Public Utilities Water Production and Lab Intern

The City of Clearwater is seeking an Intern to assist our Public Utilities/Water Production Lab team in a variety of projects.

Salary:
Interns may work for an hourly rate, for college credit with a stipend, or unpaid intern volunteer.

  • Intern Working for an Hourly Rate:
  • College Student (Freshman or Sophomore) - $13.00/per hour
  • College Student (Junior or Senior) - $14.00/per hour
  • College Student (Graduate Level) - $15.00/per hour


The internship will primarily include assisting the water production and lab divisions. Location of work will be at any of our reverse osmosis water treatment plant or lab.

The duration of the internship is flexible to meet the needs of the department and the student's academic requirements. The maximum work hours are 25 hours per week.

 Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting with water treatment processes: Collecting water samples for analysis, monitoring equipment, and performing basic maintenance on pumps and mechanical processes.
  • Analyzing water quality data: Interns may help to compile and analyze data from water samples and monitoring equipment, learning how to interpret the results and identify potential issues.
  • Participates in extensive training and education regarding the water plant and all equipment and general operations; works under direct supervision and acquires skills through on the job training.
  • Makes daily operational checks on pumps, equipment, and performs other various maintenance activities.
  • Assists in maintaining water treatment equipment to preserve proper water pressures and levels; works with more experienced plant operators in their daily tasks for training and to gain necessary skills.
  • Reads and records daily meter readings and changes necessary charts; assists and supports other experienced workers and applies skills learned.
  • Takes, gathers, and compiles water samples for chemical analysis; supports and assists other operators in the analysis of samples and application of findings.
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of pumps, meters, and related equipment; checks water quality complaints.
  • Performs lab tests on multiple lab instruments to meet D.E.P. standards; monitors SCADA programs for correct plant operations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Valid State Driver's License Required

Minimum Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled college student (undergraduate, graduate level, technical/vocational). Preferred majors/concentrations include Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, or Biology.
  • Knowledge and experience to successfully fulfill the duties and responsibilities listed above as this position will be ethical, hardworking, and a strong desire to learn. Experience can be personal or professional.
