Golf Course Agronomy Intern

One of the few industries that has really flourished after Covid-19 has been the sport of golf. Almost across the board in the golf world, rounds have gone up 20-30 percent which means a lot more money being put into Golf Clubs. Canterbury Golf Club is no different and now we are looking for a summer intern(s) who is looking to learn as much about grounds maintenance as they can in a season(s) to take on to their chosen career path.

Club Information: Canterbury Golf Club recently celebrated its centennial anniversary in 2021. It has some of the most history of any golf club in the country. It being one of two clubs in the country to host all five rotating majors (US Open, Senior US Open, PGA Championship, Senior PGA championship and US Amateur) with the some of the biggest names in golf winning them like Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. With recent improvements Canterbury Golf Club has been climbing the Golf Digest rankings up to #181 and #9 in the state of Ohio.
Candidate Qualities: A good candidate will be punctual, team oriented, has a positive attitude and willing to learn/ try new things. Able to lift 50 pounds and can expect to be doing labor intensive work a majority of the day. Crew that walk mows playing surfaces can expect to walk 4 to 5 miles. Our workday schedule goes from 6am-2:30ish. The end time is weather/event dependent. Often during storms or a lot of play, we'll send the crew home early. 6AM is early for 90 percent of the population and being on time is essential to our departments success. I assure if you are disciplined enough to wake up and get to work on time every day, you will not just succeed here but at any job you take on. We are a golf club but here at the Grounds Department, we will teach much more than how to cut grass. Really, we'll teach you anything that we know and you're interested in learning about. Our goal is to help you be successful when you leave here to go into a career.
Job Description: Our department is responsible for the management of all things on the property; golf course, clubhouse grounds, flowers, trees, patio, roads, irrigation, creeks, ponds and much more. An intern can expect to learn how to maintain all of these items and learn to operate all different types of equipment, some of which you may have never seen before. Learn how to grow grass under and 8th of an inch tall, at the highest level in the sport. Learn different species of grass, flowers, and other plants. Learn how to maintain them, make them flourish, what environments they grow and why others won't grow here. If able to stay into the the late fall months, be a part of the golf course renovation and work along respected Golf Course Architects. There will be opportunities to lead small groups if deemed able to lead, view some of the best sunrises Northeast Ohio offers, and gain characteristics like discipline, attention to detail, and accountability that help any student land a great job after school.
Work Details: This is a paid internship. Pay is 1.5x for overtime. Uniforms provided. Golfing privileges after work Mondays. Work week: 6 days a week (one weekend day for 2-4 hours) 40-50 hours summer holidays included.
Education Credits: We are willing to do anything the school requires to get the education credits and will be communicating with the school prior to hiring to be absolutely certain you're getting said credits.
