The assignments are designed to provide students with valuable career-related experience and an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills to the completion of business-related projects. Generally, projects included marketing research, preparation of financial statements, cash flow analysis, export analysis, sales forecasts, market analysis, organizational purchasing, government contracting assistance, and business plan development. Students receive exceptional training and professional supervision. Beeghly Fellows are required to commit 20-25 hours per week, and attend designated meetings and special events.

“I can only describe my experience at the Ohio Small Business Development Center at YSU as a special blessing. I have had the joy of working with a variety of clients, from cake shop owners to aluminum extruders to brewers to everyone in between. With the guidance of exceptional consultants, I’ve assisted our clients in researching profitable markets, creating cash flow statements, and so much more. I'm grateful for the opportunity to grow as a young professional and explore the potential of a future career in government procurement.”

- Kathryn Sewall, Accounting 2021

"My experience as a Beeghly Fellow has allowed me to learn and obtain a variety of skills that I will be able to use in the future of my career. It has also given me the opportunity to grow as a business professional."

- Ryan Sheffield, Management with a focus on Supply Chain Management 2021

“This internship program has enabled me and other students to expand our horizons and take on new challenges as we help local businesses thrive. The Ohio SBDC at YSU encourages and expects their interns to have hands-on experiences with clients. Because of this, I was able to participate in client meetings, work on client cash flow analysis, and be the first line of contact for new clients. In addition, the center utilized my strengths of marketing and web design, and I was able to provide feedback to clients about the usability of their websites and helped take the lead on the center’s website development.”

- Jenna Binsley, Marketing and Nonprofit Leadership 2021

"My internship has helped me not only grow as a business leader, but also as an individual. I was able to see the impacts of my work on the clients and have made lasting friendships with the people I work with."

- Alanis Chew, Business Economics and Mathematics 2020

“This internship has opened my eyes to all the wonderful opportunities the Mahoning Valley has to offer even in these uncertain times. This experience gave me the opportunity to work under inspirational and encouraging local professions, as well as working alongside other passionate and hard-working classmates, who all collaborate together to run the Ohio SBDC. I was able to gain real-life, hands on experience with clients through meetings and projects such as loan proposals and cash flows. In addition, I was able to strengthen my marketing skills through creating content for various platforms and aiding in the process of creating a website for the SBDC.”

- Georganna Norris, Marketing 2020

"My internship as a John D. Beeghly Fellow has helped me not only gain a better understanding of my studies, but also a better understanding of myself. It has shaped me as an individual and is what has lead to my growth as both a student and a business professional."
