Government Affairs Intern

This Synthomer internship is a great opportunity to gain insights and real-work experience related to government and external affairs, examining local, state, and federal government engagements, and developing professional written content to advance the company brand and build relationships in the community.

 

The role offers on-the-job training during the summer. This program is very competitive and equips students with first-hand knowledge of what it takes to effectively communicate, build reputation, and facilitate organizational success.

 

A member of the American Chemistry Council and National Association of Manufacturers, your work at Synthomer will have strong writing, research and strategic implementation components as you collaborate internally with Synthomer colleagues and externally with trade associations, community stakeholders and government offices such as elected officials and agencies.   The focus will be primarily domestic US service, however, may include foreign policy and global team engagement.

 

As an intern in government affairs, you will:

  • Monitor and track state and local policies concerning as they relate to our local operations in Ohio, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, etc.
  • Research appropriations projects and funding streams such as grants and tax incentives at local, state and federal levels.  
  • Explore the globe working with US and international teams
  • Expand skills throughout the summer by working on projects with seasoned professionals
  • Attend (in-person) local meeting with elected officials such as City, County, State or Federal districts, and support community engagement.
  • Attend (virtually) Congressional Hearings, Trade Association webinars, and Governmental agency events to produce various hearing transcripts/memos as it pertains to our priorities.
  • Support the Synthomer team with planned fly-ins, elected official visits, or event preparation for the fall.
  • Participate in advocacy work to advance industrial decarbonization, and follow legislative work related to chemicals regulatory issues and sustainability.
  • Write social media, e-newsletter articles and other communications items to highlight the work of the Government affairs team.
  • Leverage data science and AI to develop programming quickly
  • Produce various documents as needed for external stakeholders.
  • Research may include foreign policy and organizational mapping.
  • Perform additional duties as necessary to advance our government and external affairs agenda and communication readiness.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ideal candidate is a university or college student entering their junior or senior year of undergraduate studies, and/or graduate level.
  • Ability to work approximately 35 hours per week (in-person ~3-4 days, and remotely ~1-2 days, during the workweek). There is flexibility around remote workdays to accommodate schedules.
  • Ability to intern from late May till early August (exact start/end dates are flexible).  This role may be renew during fall-2024 with reduced hours to accommodate academic learning.
  • Ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with multiple short-term and long-term projects
  • Strong written communications skills including writing, proofreading, editing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite, and online research
  • Some knowledge of policymaking (at any government level)
  • This position does not offer sponsorship
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Majoring in political science, communications, marketing, English, or business
  • Knowledge of chemistry, engineering, or manufacturing is preferred.
  • Knowledge of local politics in OH, PA, or SC is a plus.
  • Knowledge and use of Adobe products such as In-Design and Photoshop is a plus.
