USAG-Italy Occupational Health and Safety Intern

The U.S. Army Garrison-Italy is offering an undergraduate or graduate student internship at the USAG-Italy facility.

What will I be doing?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and mission support personnel to learn the full OHS surveying process, gaining experience with equipment calibration, field work, analysis requisitions, and report writing. You will participate in working groups and the SOHAC semi-annually to provide updates and visibility to senior leaders.

  • Performing a confined space inventory audit
  • Developing visual safety aids and training materials
  • Developing personnel protective equipment and machine tool guarding guides and standard operating procedures
  • Developing analysis, research resources, then develop and ensure implementation of Traffic Safety Program
  • Developing Installation level radiation protection program
  • Researching and developing courses of action for effective explosive management program

What is the anticipated start date?

Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length? 

This appointment is a twelve /month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.

About USAG-Italy

The U.S. Army Garrison Italy, Installation Safety Office is responsible for the implementation of the Army Safety Management System for the Installation and the Safety and Occupational Health Program. The mission of the Installation Safety Office is to safeguard and protect service members, their families, civilian employees and Army and Air Force property across United States Army Garrison Italy. The five core functions for the Office are: program management; training and promotion; inspections/assessments; mishap investigation reporting and analysis; and hazard analysis and countermeasures.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate is currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree.

Highly competitive applicants will have education and/or experience in one or more of the following:

  • Experience planning goals and objectives
  • Experience with evaluation and research.
  • Experience applying a variety of communication methods
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to work well in a fast-paced team environment 
  • Knowledge and skills in collecting, compiling, analyzing, and reporting program outcomes
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
