Description

The Test and Assessment Department of the Research and Development Directorate for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is offering a bachelor's or master's level internship opportunity in special studies and risk management assessment research.

What will I be doing and why should I apply?

As an ORISE participant, you will join a community of scientists and researchers, engaging in planning and accomplishing research projects in the Test and Assessment Department of the Research and Development Directorate - Test Support, Sensitive Assessment Division, Programs Branch at DTRA. As an intern, you'll be exposed to cutting edge technologies and have a role in equipment fielding decisions across the DoD. Under the guidance of a mentor, you will engage in online research activities involving assessment and risk management. Learning opportunities will include:

  • Observing and participating in online research activities to support special studies and risk management assessments.
  • Conducting market research for commercial off the shelf and government off the shelf systems to support classified DoD activities and military activities.
  • Learning and gaining experience in managed attribution systems. 
  • Participating in the development of a study plan, team meetings, and meetings with personnel conducting various classified missions.
  • Observing classified briefings.
  • Participating in the development of products that present the results of the online research.
  • Collaborating with analysts that are leading the research efforts in special studies and risk management assessments.

What is the anticipated start date?

The Test and Assessment Department of the Research and Development Directorate for DTRA is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and internships or fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.

What is the appointment length?

This appointment is a full-time, twelve-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant. 

What are the benefits?

You will receive a stipend to be determined by DTRA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. The anticipated stipend range for this opportunity is $5300-$5800 per month based on full time participation.

About ORISE

This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.  Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have an earned bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Information, Data Sciences, Databases, Information and Data Sciences, Operations Research, Analysis, Public Policy, International Relations, Library Science, Risk Analysis or related discipline within the past 60 months, or are expected to earn a master's degree in one of these disciplines by May 1, 2024

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required.
  • Candidate must be at least 21 years of age at the time of application. 
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a security clearance and pass random drug screening.
  • Candidates who are currently students or graduates of an HBCU or MSI are encouraged to apply.

Highly qualified candidates will demonstrate:

  • Online data discovery and analysis experience and/or skills.
  • Understanding of organization of data on the Internet
  • Experience with various search engines, compilation of data, data trends, data analysis.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Understanding of the use of Virtual Private Networks.
