Project Chemist

American Colors is a growing company who manufactures liquid colorants and specialty chemicals to diverse applications that include paint, coatings, adhesives, composites, films, landscape & agriculture. Our headquarters is based in Sandusky, OH and we have three other locations in the United States as well as Italy and China.

As a project chemist, the laboratory work would involve the use of specialized equipment and hands-on work to formulate, test, and develop new products to fulfil the needs of our customers. Additionally, this position lends technical support to our customers, manufacturing operations, as well as working in cross-functional teams from other areas of our business. 

Summary of Position:

This full-time position supports both our external and internal customers by:

  • Experimental design and laboratory trials to formulate new and innovative products as well as improve existing formulations.
  • Safely perform laboratory bench work to verify formulations and perform validation work to customer specifications utilizing equipment and processes including, but not limited to:
    • Particle dispersion by media milling and high-speed mixing
    • Particle size analysis
    • FTIR spectroscopy
    • Color spectroscopy  
    • UV-Vis spectroscopy
    • Physical testing suite including viscometers, non-volatile analyzer, pH measurement, moisture titration, accelerated weather testing
  • Provide technical support to our customers in conjunction with our sales team both remotely and through on-site customer visits.
  • Work with our sales and marketing group to develop and introduce new product lines.
  • Collaborate with our Purchasing team and vendors to coordinate the introduction of new raw materials.
  • Provide technical support to our Manufacturing team through scale-up trials and new product launches.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of laboratory activities including but not limited to formulations, test results, status updates, and project reports.

 

Qualifications:

  • BS/BA in an appropriate field of science (Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Physics).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate as part of a team to diagnose problems and successfully convert challenging projects.
  • Must be adaptable to fluid priorities and able to manage more than one project at a time.
  • Desire to continually learn and share new information with peers to increase the general knowledge base of processes, products, and technologies.
  • Availability and willingness to travel to customers, vendors, or other American Colors facilities.
