Clinical Lab Technologist III- Hematology

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Performs a full range of services as assigned under the general supervision of the Supervisor, Assistant Director, and the Director of Laboratory and Lab Administrator.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs clinical testing in laboratory areas where he/she is fully trained and in compliance with Federal, NYSDOH, CAP and TJC standards.
  • Answers the telephone and uses effective communication techniques.
  • Complies with KCHC and department policies for Safety, Quality Improvement and Infection Control.
  • Understands the principles of and competently performs a variety of techniques in both manual and automated testing; follows KCHC laboratory established policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines; records and files all data obtained.
  • Provides guidance and technical training to clinical laboratory technicians and technologists and other appropriate laboratory personnel; coordinates, reviews, and monitors their work; presents constructive feedback and suggestions on activities of subordinates to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow standard and complex scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Participates in non-routine testing procedures in association with specialized research program(s); makes suggestions to minor modifications to procedures, techniques, and tests as appropriate and required.
  • Reports critical value results promptly and documents them immediately as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines.
  • Performs all automated Complete Blood Counts.
  • Performs Coagulation Profiles, Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rates, Reticulocyte Counts, Sickle Cell Solubility, Slide preparation and staining, and manual differential counts.
  • Performs automated Urinalysis testing and manual Urinalysis including microscopic analysis and urine pregnancy testing.
  • Performs all Quality Control procedures on all assigned tests and methods.
  • Performs Preventive Maintenance on all equipment assigned.
  • Performs Proficiency Testing in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Demonstrates computer skills on the laboratory information system, including documentation of test orders, accessioning of specimens, resulting tests and quality control documentation.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor that are within the job description parameters.
  • Performs phlebotomy procedures when necessary.
  • Performs daily Quality Control procedures which include monitoring of the satellite refrigerators.
  • Understands and practices the elements of the National Patient Safety Goals especially with regard to ensuring proper specimen / patient integrity.
  • Adheres to organizational policy for annual education, assessment and in-service education.
  • Demonstrates positive interpersonal relations in dealing with staff, patients and visitors to promote teamwork, efficiency and to provide quality patient care.
  • Assists in on-the-job or classroom training of subordinates, new personnel and other persons as required.
  • Under direction, reviews work of subordinates and evaluates work performance.
  • Implements corrective action when needed to maintain the work of the lab at a satisfactory level.
  • Orders and maintains adequate amount of stock, reagents and other supplies or assists with this function.

Calibrations and Quality Controls / Quality Assurance:                      

  • Analyzes all quality control materials and reviews data.
  • Complies with all quality control rules as per KCHC laboratory established guidelines.
  • Takes corrective action when necessary.
  • Documents activities as necessary. 
  • Enters and retrieves patient data accurately utilizing the laboratory computer system.

 

Preventive Maintenance:

  • Performs preventive maintenance.
  • Documents activities as required.
  • Performs troubleshooting techniques for major instruments when applicable.
  • Corrects problems or notifies the supervisor immediately.
  • Documents all corrective action taken.

 

Other Factors:

  • Attends, participates in, and evaluates continuing and in-service education programs.
  • Is aware of, contributes to, and observes laboratory safety at all times.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Participates in the development, evaluation, and implementation of new methods and equipment if requested.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in area of specialty. 
  • Prepares packages for shipment within the guidelines of KCHC laboratory established policy and procedure.
  • Completes all required documentation and reporting in accordance with departmental and other regulatory schedules.
