Law and Policy Intern

For Love of Water (FLOW) seeks to hire 1L and 2L summer legal interns for summer 2024. Our legal interns engage in FLOW’s water protection law and policy programs – locally inspired but with international reach. We’re looking for 2 or 3 passionate advocates ready for hands-on work in one of the best summer locations in the US, on the shores of northern Lake Michigan. Responsibilities and opportunities include writing legal and policy memos, doing fact research, attending coalition meetings and hearings, and participating in organizational events. Interns work with experienced policymakers and environmental lawyers engaged in active litigation to protect public waters and keep them public, clean up waterways, and enforce state and federal environmental laws.

About FLOW: We are Great Lakes water protectors based in Traverse City, Michigan. As an independent, non-partisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, FLOW works to protect 20% of the planet’s fresh surface water for the benefit of all. We are a trusted source of information for citizens and decision-makers on issues affecting the Great Lakes, groundwater, and drinking water, from the Midwest to DC, Ottawa, and beyond. Through targeted policy initiatives and multi-media communications, we advance cutting-edge public trust policy solutions through impact litigation, shaping legislation, and advising state and federal agencies. We have major new funding to implement an impact litigation agenda in 2024. Legal interns will be important members of our team – drafting research memoranda, investigating facts, assisting in development of policy papers and media communications, and attending hearings, coalition meetings, briefings, and other events to advance FLOW’s mission.

Qualifications: Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited law school with a strong academic record, outstanding legal research and writing skills, and demonstrated interest in environmental justice and public interest work.

Compensation: This is a paid internship, with the option of working at FLOW’s office in Traverse City, Michigan, or remotely. Compensation is $3,000 per month, with flexible dates.
