The Singh Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

The Singh Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE – Department of Anatomy

Description

The lab of Dr. Param Singh at UCSF (www.singhlabucsf.org) is looking for a Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist to join our team and contribute to new and ongoing projects. The Singh Lab is part of the Department of Anatomy and the UCSF Bakar Aging Research Institute (BARI). Using African killifish as a model system, our lab focuses on decoding the genomic and epigenomic basis of gene regulation during complex phenotypes such as diapause, aging, and age-related diseases.

The African killifish is the shortest-lived vertebrate in captivity and, due to its compressed lifespan, is an emerging model for research on aging and age-related diseases. Killifish can also undergo a long developmental diapause akin to ‘suspended animation’. We are looking for creative and passionate individuals at any stage of their careers who want to leverage the unique biology of killifish to discover innovative ways to combat aging and age-related diseases. The candidate will work on interdisciplinary projects including high-throughput and single-cell multi-omics, CRISPR-Cas9-based genome editing, and molecular and developmental biology techniques, and bioinformatics analyses. The candidates will also have an opportunity to design and develop new experimental protocols for killifish research.

The specialist will be expected to assist with managing day-to-day lab operations (inventory, ordering etc.), killifish husbandry, perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, and be involved in grant and manuscript writing, when appropriate. The position provides an excellent opportunity for close mentorship and guidance in research and career development, and candidates interested in applying to graduate or medical school are strongly encouraged to apply.

Required Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
• Willingness and ability to learn new methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work tasks with others, and meet multiple deadlines.
• Ability to keep detailed records.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Detailed knowledge or a degree in cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, biological engineering or related disciplines.
• Experience with molecular or developmental biology techniques, including working with DNA, protein (IHC and Western blotting), RNA extraction, qPCR/qRT-PCR analysis, confocal imaging, gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9) etc.
• Prior experience in working with animal or aquatic models such as mice, killifish or zebrafish.
• Experience or desire to learn next-generation genomics library preparation such as 10x-genomics and RNA/ATAC/ChIP-seq, metabolomics etc.
• Experience in bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput bulk or single-cell genomic datasets such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq etc is a plus.

We are seeking at least a 1-year, and preferably, a 2-year commitment. Applicants must meet requirements by the time of the appointment.

Specialists (Represented):
See Table 24B (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2022-23/july-2022-salary-scales/t24-b.pdf) for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000-$173,900.
