The Singh Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology

The Singh Lab – Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist in Bioinformatics or Computational Biology
SCHOOL OF MEDICINE – Department of Anatomy

Description
The lab of Dr. Param Singh at UCSF (www.singhlabucsf.org) is looking for a Junior/Assistant/Associate/Full Specialist with expertise in bioinformatics or computational biology to join our team and contribute to new and ongoing projects. The Singh Lab is part of the Department of Anatomy and the UCSF Bakar Aging Research Institute (BARI). Using African killifish as a model system, our lab focuses on decoding the genomic and epigenomic basis of gene regulation during complex phenotypes such as diapause, aging, and age-related diseases.
The African killifish is the shortest-lived vertebrate in captivity and, due to its compressed lifespan, is an emerging model for research on aging and age-related diseases. Killifish can also undergo a long developmental diapause akin to ‘suspended animation’. We are looking for creative and passionate individuals at any stage of their careers who want to leverage the unique biology of killifish to discover innovative ways to combat aging and age-related diseases. The candidate will work on interdisciplinary projects including analyses of high-throughput single-cell and bulk multi-omics datasets during aging and in diapause. The candidates will also design and develop new computational approaches that push the boundaries of current genomic technology for data integration across model organisms and humans to understand the fundamentals of gene regulation during development and diseases.

The bioinformatics specialist will be expected to collaborate with other experimental and computational biologists, perform general lab duties and be a positive lab citizen. An exceptional candidate will lead their own independent project, develop new ideas, and be involved in grant and manuscript writing, when appropriate. The position provides opportunities for close mentorship and guidance in research and future career development for both academia and industry.

Required Qualifications:
• Expertise with programming in at least one language such as R, Python, Perl etc.
• Willingness and ability to learn new computational methods and skills for changing research priorities.
• Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills (verbal and written).
• Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) or four years of research experience to be appointed at the Junior rank.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a master’s degree (or equivalent degree) or at least five to ten years of research experience to be appointed at the Assistant or Associate ranks.
• Must have (or be in process of obtaining) a terminal degree (or equivalent degree) or at least ten or more years of research experience to be appointed at the Full rank.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Detailed knowledge or a degree in bioinformatics, computer science, statistics, mathematics, data science, biological engineering, molecular biology, or related disciplines.
• Experience or enthusiasm to learn bioinformatics analysis of high-throughput bulk and single-cell genomic datasets such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, ChIP-seq, lipidomics, metabolomics etc.
• Expertise in R or Python programming and shell scripting in a Unix/Linux-based HPC environment.
• Experience working with version control systems such as Git, GitHub and reproducible computational research practices including Jupyter or Google Colab notebooks and AWS.
• Knowledge of statistical methods for data analysis, preferably with applications to high-throughput genomics.

We are seeking at least a 1-year, and preferably, a 2-year commitment. Applicants must meet requirements by the time of the appointment.

Specialists (Represented):
See Table 24B (https://www.ucop.edu/academic-personnel-programs/_files/2022-23/july-2022-salary-scales/t24-b.pdf) for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $49,000-$173,900.
