Nonprofit Leadership Internship

About OVWA
Ohio Victim Witness Association (OVWA) is a statewide advocacy nonprofit committed to promoting, protecting, and upholding equal rights and fair treatment for victims and witnesses of crime. In fulfilling the mission, OVWA provides technical assistance to support direct services to victims of crime, promotes continuing education training, and collaborates in the development of criminal justice public policy. It is the responsibility of every OVWA employee, volunteer, intern, and organizational member to uphold the mission and purpose of the organization, to follow established ethical guidelines, and to maintain professional service practices which are culturally sensitive and inclusive.

Internship Responsibilities
The Nonprofit Leadership Intern will work alongside the Executive Director and Program Director to accomplish their learning goals and assist with OVWA operations. Tasks may include the following:
  • Assists with grant and foundation prospecting, applications, and management
  • Assists with fundraising efforts (e.g., creates or updates a fundraising strategy, schedules and promotes fundraisers, develops relationships with possible donors)
  • Advocates for increases to line item and other funding sources for member agencies
  • Develops a new initiative for a facilitated support group for Ohio advocates
  • Assists in determining the current needs of Ohio crime victim advocates in order to plan for pertinent trainings, development of best practice guides, creative solutions to provide support, etc.
  • Develops and delivers trainings to member agencies (direct service providers) on topics such as: leadership and supervisory skills, trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques, cultural sensitivity, confidentiality, ethics, etc.
  • Researches and schedules experts to deliver trainings on topics such as: serving co-victims of suicide, serving victims with disabilities, safety for providers, trauma-informed supervision, etc.
  • Cultivates strong working relationships with member agencies and responds to requests for technical assistance
  • Conducts outreach to direct service agencies who are not members of OVWA to introduce them to our services
  • Meets with OVWA staff and pertinent Committees; convenes meetings with Committees; prepares for meetings; takes notes
  • Represents OVWA on various national, statewide, regional, and local boards, advisory committees, and focus groups as requested
  • Creates best practice guides and toolkits for member agencies
  • Fiscal: Documents tasks completed, hours interned, and as needed, completes timely service records and/or expenditure documentation
  • Adhere to the philosophy, policies, and procedures of OVWA
  • Adhere to the tenants of the NOVA Code of Professional Ethics and the NVASC Standards of Ethical Conduct for Victim Assistance Programs and Providers along with any ethics related to personal professional credentials
  • Based upon interests/goals, we can also work with you to learn best practices in management skills, working with a board of directors, fiscal management, etc.

Hours: OVWA is open Monday-Friday from 9am to 5pm. Interns should plan to work a set weekly schedule, but hours/days are flexible.

Location: Internship may be in person, remote, or a combination. OVWA offices are located in north Columbus and are not easily accessible by public transit. Offices are not ADA compliant.
 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor Degree (completed or in progress) in Business or Nonprofit Business Administration, Social Work, Sociology, or other pertinent field
  • Previous work, volunteer, or course experience in business or nonprofit leadership is preferred
  • Excellent, professional written and oral communication skills
  • Self-motivated work ethic with the ability to collaborate with others
  • Strong research and critical thinking skills
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Windows, and Zoom
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
