Position Summary:
Fitness Attendants are responsible for having working knowledge of the proper use of free weights, cardiovascular equipment and selectorized machines, enforce policies and procedures of the exercise floor as well as the SRWC, take an active role in the daily maintenance and cleanliness of the exercise floor, promote member exercise incentive programming while delivering positive customer service skills at all times including potentially maintaining responsibilities at the front desk, court or facility areas. We are currently accepting applications for eligible student employees for potentially May 2022 - August 2022. To work in the fall semester, you must be eligible to attend Fall Staff Training on Sunday August 21st. Please see specific job duties below. To work over the summer, you must be enrolled in classes for either the summer 2022 or fall 2022 semesters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Deliver positive customer service at all times
  • Be familiar with SRWC emergency procedures, protocols, and display confidence in the implementation of each. Common examples are current mask/facial covering policies, weight room policies, attire policies, etc.
  • Ensure the SRWC is a safe and clean environment for members. This position has a lot of manual labor and cleaning tasks 
  • Follow the equipment reporting policy for all equipment irregularities, including any that are standard maintenance and repair
  • Become proficient in and enforce all policies, procedures, guidelines of the SRWC in a firm, fair and consistent manner when applicable. Customer service is never compromised
  • Adhere to all University of Akron and SRWS policies
  • Maintain positive communication skills with all peers, superiors and employees
  • Attend staff meetings and training classes. Assist in staff training through direct instruction and/or participation
  • Display proficiency in the operation of basic computer skills as well as CSI software
  • Provide individual guidance and backup support to program staff 
  • Circulating on the exercise floor (including the track, studio, courts, and lounge areas) in an effort to assist any guests or members with questions or exercise issues
  • Provide instruction with members and/or guests if they appear to be in need of assistance or if they are endangering themselves or others 
  • Follow the cleaning and preventive maintenance inspection program.  All equipment needs to be inspected and cleaned consistently 
  • Demonstrate confidence and familiarity with all exercise floor equipment. Perform equipment orientations for members regarding free weights, cardiovascular equipment and selectorized machines
  • Assist in the development and implementation of member exercise incentive programs to motivate and enhance member participation. Maintain current knowledge on and encourage participation in all SRWC programs, services and activities
  • Perform daily operational tasks in a timely and proficient manner as directed

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a full-time student at The University of Akron for the duration of the semester in which you are employed. This includes a minimum of 12 credit hours for undergraduate students; 9 credit hours for graduate students
  • Current CPR, First Aid, AED certifications (can be attained upon employment)
  • Basic computer operational skills
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills 
  • Ability to be punctual and work variable hours necessary
  • Maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times  
  • Ability to work at least 3 shifts a week, ranging in total from 9-20 hours a week, including alternating weekend shifts. Those who have opening, closing, and weekend availability will increase their chances of obtaining employment. Maximum of 29 hours a week allowed for student employees (19 hours a week for international student employees)


Preferred in one or more of the following: 
  • Preferred major in exercise science or other health related field
  • Previous fitness related employment (gyms, rec centers, etc.)
  • Currently holds any nationally recognized fitness related certification or ability to obtain (Personal Training, Group Instruction, etc.)


Salary Range: $9.30

All University of Akron student employees must meet the designated minimum standards as stated on the Student Employment Eligibility Chart. UA student employees must be 18 years or older at the time of their start date. Any approved remote work conducted by student employees MUST be performed within the state of Ohio.
