Nonprofit Marketing Intern
This internship is built for someone who wants to learn the full spectrum of nonprofit marketing — not just one slice of it. You’ll help manage our social media presence, support a website refresh, and get out into the community to capture real rider stories on video and camera. By the end of this internship, you’ll have built a consistent content calendar, contributed directly to a rider testimonial campaign, and have a portfolio of real, published work to show for it.
What You’ll Do
• Manage day-to-day social media scheduling across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, working from a content calendar built with our Communications Lead.
• Create original content including rider spotlights, service updates, and community event recaps — written posts, photos, and short-form video.
• Capture video and photos in the field at WAVE buses, community events, and rider meetups — this is the most in-person part of the role and involves being out in the community, not just behind a desk.
• Support basic website updates such as correcting outdated content, adding new service announcements, and helping fix accessibility issues identified in WAVE’s recent digital audit (e.g., image descriptions, content errors).
• Help grow WAVE’s public reviews and visibility by supporting a rider review campaign across Google, Facebook, and Yelp.
• Organize and maintain our Canva asset library so templates and brand materials are easy for the whole team to find and reuse.
• Track basic engagement metrics on a monthly basis (likes, shares, follower growth) and help flag what content is resonating.
What We’re Looking For
Required
• Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a marketing, communications, journalism, or related program
• Comfortable using social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) from a content-creator perspective, not just as a personal user
• Reliable access to transportation to be on-site in Chelsea, MI for in-person work and community events
• Comfortable approaching and talking with community members and riders, including older adults and people with disabilities
• Organized and able to manage a content calendar and meet weekly deadlines with minimal supervision
Preferred (Nice to Have)
• Experience with Canva or similar design tools
• Basic photo or video editing experience (phone-based editing is great — no professional equipment required)
• Experience with WordPress or other website content management systems
• Interest in public transit, accessibility, nonprofit work, or community organizing
• Spanish language skills (a plus, not required, given WAVE’s diverse rider base)
Compensation & Schedule
• Pay: $16–$18/hour, based on experience
• Hours: 20 hours/week. We’ll work with your class schedule — most hours can be set on a recurring weekly basis with some flexibility for exam weeks.
• Location: Primarily in-person at WAVE’s Chelsea office and out in the community for events and video/photo shoots. Some scheduling and content-creation tasks can be done remotely once you’re comfortable in the role.
• Duration: Semester-based, with the possibility of extending or renewing based on mutual fit.
