Management Intern - Public Works

Job Summary

Under the supervision and direction of the Senior Management Analyst II, the Management Intern provides general administrative staff support to the Senior Management Analyst II and the Public Works Department. The Management Intern also assists with the completion of day-to-day assignments. The Management Intern will have the opportunity to interact and provide support to other City departments to round out the overall local government experience. The Management Intern is expected to complete tasks and assignments using independent judgment, skill and personal initiative.  

This is a one year set-term position.  This position will work up to 32 hours per week with a flexible schedule but Fridays are required.  

About the City
Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, just north of the cities of Pasadena and Glendale, the City of La Cañada Flintridge is an affluent, low-density residential community which enjoys a suburban character and a small-town atmosphere while maintaining a close proximity to the downtown Los Angeles urban center. Commercial development in the City is almost exclusively limited to the frontage along Foothill Boulevard, the main surface thoroughfare.

The City has a population of approximately 21,800 within its 8.6 square miles. The City was incorporated as a general-law city on December 8, 1976, with a Council/Manager form of government. Some city services are provided under contract with the County of Los Angeles or other private entities. In-house staff provides general administration, public works, and planning services to the community.

Examples of Duties

  • Answer incoming calls to the Department and provide exceptional customer service
  • Support the City’s solid waste program, including performing Construction & Demolition compliance reviews 
  • Support the Department’s Engineering division, including updating the status of the City’s active Capital Improvement Projects
  • Support the City’s Transportation program, including reviewing and monitoring performance metrics and performing ride checks in the field
  • Support the Department’s ongoing data management improvements, including assisting with GIS implementation, and maintaining Department electronic and paper files
  • Assist with public outreach for the Department
  • Assist the Department with items related to the City Council or Public Works and Traffic Commission
  • Other projects as needed

Responsibilities
Prepares and presents comprehensive analytical and statistical reports; assists in the preparation of draft resolutions and ordinances; confers with and assists persons requesting information or services; investigates causes of complaints and recommends appropriate action(s) to be taken; reviews department operations and makes recommendations for improvement; conducts special surveys and gathers information; prepares correspondence for signature; assists in the City's compliance with various federal and state programs; monitors public compliance with local regulations; prepares information for graphical display; works with City contractors to ensure compliance with contractual obligations; attends and makes reports and presentations at various meetings; and assists with general office duties such as answering phones, photocopying, assisting the general public, etc.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of: the major principles, practices and techniques of administration in the public sector; computer or keyboard skills; proficiency of Microsoft suite; operation of office equipment (phones, fax, postage meter, copy machine).

Ability to: follow directions and work independently on tasks assigned; learn quickly and adapt to changing priorities; communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing; work cooperatively with others.

Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Education: Current enrollment in, or recent graduation within the past six (6) months from an accredited college or university.

A degree or major coursework in the fields of political science, business administration, public administration, or a closely related field is highly desirable. 

Experience: No previous experience is required; however, any prior experience working in a local government organization is highly desirable.

Benefits

Cafeteria Section 125 Plan

  • Currently, the monthly City-paid benefit is $775 per month, which is available on the first of the month following hire date.  It may be used to purchase health insurance (under the CalPERS Health Insurance program), dental insurance (Delta), and vision insurance (VSP). 
  • Alternatively, if you do not elect benefits which will use any or all this amount, you may elect to receive the remaining Cafeteria Plan amount, up to a maximum of $700 in taxable cash 
  • Optional participation in Flexible Spending Accounts, including Health Flexible Spending and Dependent Day Care Accounts, are also available.

California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS)

  • PEPRA members receive the 2%@62 benefit formula with highest three-year compensation. PEPRA members will contribute 7.75% of their pay towards the cost of their retirement program.
  • The City does not participate in the Social Security system for employees covered by CalPERS.

Leave

  • Holidays: Four paid holidays per year (New Year's Day, July 4th, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day) at eight hours each.
  • Sick Leave: 40 hours per year.

Deferred Compensation

  • The City offers an optional 457 Deferred Compensation Plan for employee contributions.

Life Insurance

  • Supplemental coverage available for purchase.
