Grocery Merchandising Intern

Food City Interns work on meaningful projects spanning all solutions and services throughout the company. Created for upcoming Junior and Senior college students, our full-time (40 hours/week), 12-week programs are designed to provide hands-on experience within your area of interest. As an Intern, you will join over 19,000 talented individuals across five states who are leaders, critical thinkers, accountable, innovative, flexible, and results-minded with the same goal – to better serve our communities.

Location:             1 Food City Circle, Abingdon, VA (Corporate Departments)

**Housing options are available through partnership with Emory & Henry University in Emory, VA and King University in Bristol, TN

Description: As a Grocery Merchandising Intern, you will gain hands-on experience supporting the Category Management and Space Management teams at our Corporate Support Center. This internship provides exposure to the strategic and analytical side of grocery retail, where you will learn how merchandising decisions are made to drive sales, enhance customer experience, and support overall business goals.

Interns will work alongside experienced Category Managers and Space Management Associates to assist with product assortment planning, category reviews, shelf layout and merchandising strategies, promotional planning, sales analysis, and market research. You may also gain exposure to planogram development, vendor partnerships, product performance evaluation, and data-driven decision-making processes.

This opportunity offers valuable insight into how products are selected, positioned, and managed across a large retail organization. Interns will develop analytical, organizational, and communication skills while contributing to meaningful projects and gaining a deeper understanding of category management, space planning, and retail merchandising operations. 

Program Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university as a Junior or Senior, majoring in a relevant field of study.
  • Recently graduated in December 2026 or May 2027 with an undergraduate degree in a relevant field of study.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA, cumulative.
  • Interest in working in a food safety role in a retail or restaurant environment.
  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office Applications such as Outlook, word, Excel, and other programs of similar scope.
  • Have strong communication, interpersonal, and time management skills.
  • Ability to preserve confidentiality of company information.
  • Ability to work with own initiative, and desire to participate in and learn from the program’s experience.

Not Required, but Encouraged:

  • Previous experience in a professional work environment
  • Participation in leadership roles
  • Community involvement and volunteerism
