REPORTS TO: Director of Program Operations
HOURS: 15 hours per week, at $18.40/hour
DURATION: 4-6 months
LOCATION: Hybrid (part-time in office in Washington, DC to align with SWHR’s hybrid work schedule; part-time remote work). Candidates should be based in the DMV area (Washington, D.C., Maryland, or Virginia).
ABOUT THE SOCIETY FOR WOMEN’S HEALTH RESEARCH
The Society for Women’s Health Research (SWHR) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing women’s health through science, policy, and education. SWHR works to improve health outcomes for women across the lifespan by promoting research, convening experts and stakeholders, and translating evidence into actionable resources for patients, clinicians, policymakers, and the public.
POSITION SUMMARY
SWHR is seeking a detail-oriented, motivated, and responsible Programs Intern to support SWHR’s mission to advance women’s health through science, policy, and education, while promoting research on sex differences to optimize women’s health. The intern will support efforts across the Programs Department and can expect to support background research, resource development, program planning, and logistics, among other tasks.
This internship provides an opportunity to gain hands-on experience in nonprofit program management, stakeholder engagement, health communications, and event management. This role is ideal for an undergraduate student interested in women’s health, public health, biomedical research, health equity, science communication, or health advocacy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct background and landscape research on a variety of women’s health areas of focus, which may include menopause, autoimmune disease, cardiovascular health, obesity, bone health, and other areas relevant to SWHR programs.
- Assist in the planning and execution of SWHR events including webinars, roundtables, working group engagements, etc.
- Support the development of program materials, including briefing documents, meeting agendas, speaker bios, discussion guides, and blog posts.
- Assist the creation of a wide range of SWHR resources and materials, which may include, but is not limited to, toolkits, guides, fact sheets, and infographics
- Conduct research on and support outreach to relevant experts, organizations, community partners, and stakeholders for SWHR programs.
- Monitor news, research, policy developments, and emerging issues related to women’s health and summarize key information.
- Assist with citation management, resource organization, and basic synthesis of deliverable or program information.
- Perform general administrative and logistical tasks to support the Programs Team as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in public health, health policy, biology, women/gender studies, communications, nonprofit management, or a related field.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
- Excellent organization skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple priorities, timelines, and priorities.
- Experience with digital management tools including, but not limited to Microsoft Office, Outlook, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
- Specific interest in women’s health, public health, health equity, science, or health policy is preferred.
- Experience supporting events, webinars, or stakeholder meetings is a plus.
- Experience with Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Office, Adobe, Canva, Zoom, or similar platforms is desirable but not required.

TIME COMMITMENT
The internship requires approximately 15 hours per week, with set work hours and days. Specific schedule is flexible dependent upon the candidate and will be agreed upon between the parties and approved by the SWHR team prior to internship start date. Internship duration may be adjusted based on academic requirements and organizational needs.
COMPENSATION
$18.40 per hour
