Licensed Veterinary Technician
General Definition of Work:
Performs semiskilled work providing high-quality medical and surgical support to the shelter veterinarian and the overall veterinary team. Assists with the care, treatment, and rehabilitation of animals housed in the shelter and community owned animals, including performing medical procedures, administering medications, conducting diagnostics, and monitoring the health of animals. The LVT also supports the shelter's mission to promote the health and welfare of the animals under its care while adhering to humane and ethical practices. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor. Limited oversight is exercised over assigned personnel.

Essential Functions:
The following duties are representative of the range of duties assigned to this role and are not intended to be an exhaustive list:

Clinical Support
- Assists the Shelter Veterinarian in performing physical exams, diagnostic tests, and medical treatments for shelter and community owned animals.
- Prepares animals for surgery, including anesthesia induction, monitoring during surgery, and post-operative care.
- Administers medications and vaccines as directed by the Shelter Veterinarian.
- Collects and prepares laboratory samples for diagnostic testing, including blood work, urinalysis, and other diagnostic tests.
- Monitors vital signs of animals during and after medical procedures and surgeries.
- Performs diagnostic imaging, such as X-rays.

Surgical Assistance
- Assists in spay/neuter surgeries and other routine or emergency surgeries.
- Ensures proper surgical aseptic techniques are followed.
- Prepares surgical instruments and ensure that they are sterile and in proper working order.
- Assists with wound care and post-operative management.

Shelter Animal Care
- Provides daily monitoring and care of animals housed at the shelter, including administering treatments and ensuring the overall well-being of the animals.
- Assists with the treatment and rehabilitation of injured, sick, or abandoned animals.
- Provides immediate medical assistance in emergency situations.
- Documents and updates medical records for each animal, ensuring that accurate and timely information is maintained.
- Assists in the preparation and management of euthanasia, following all legal and ethical protocols, when necessary.

Client and Public Interaction
- Provides information and education to the public on animal care, disease prevention, and general health maintenance.
- Assists in client education for animals adopted from the shelter, including providing post-adoption care instructions and guidance.

Team Collaboration and Training
- Collaborates with shelter veterinarians, shelter staff, and other veterinary team members to provide effective animal care.
- Helps train and mentor junior kennel technicians and/or volunteers.
- Assists in inventory management for medical supplies and equipment.
- Participates in shelter team meetings to discuss medical protocols, procedures, and animal care strategies.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Associate's degree in Veterinary Technology from an accredited program
Experience: Moderate (1+ years) experience working as a licensed veterinary technician, preferably in a shelter or high-volume clinic setting. Experience in performing spay/neuter surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and emergency care is required. Must be able to work well with a diverse team and demonstrate excellent teamwork skills.
Special Requirements:
- Current and valid state licensure as a Veterinary Technician. Must maintain continuing education requirements for licensure.
- Willingness to work outside of regular office hours for emergency care, outreach, or special events.
- Must maintain licensure and certification as required by law and organizational standards.
