Facilities Management - Waste & Recycling

Location: George Mason Facilities Building, 10402 Rivanna River Way, Fairfax, VA
Internship Type: Paid, $17/hr. Up to 30 Hrs./week
Duration: May 24, 2027 – August 13, 2027

About the Role
Support Mason’s award-winning Waste & Recycling Department in advancing campus sustainability. This internship offers practical experience in waste audits, composting systems, and recycling education.

What You’ll Learn & Do

  • Support the waste recycle initiatives;
  • Collect data, shadow waste/recycle workers on routes, and recommend processes to improve efficiency;
  • Support the waste/recycling team with training on technology & software; Support the implementation of new glass recycling locations in academic and housing residential life buildings; 
  • Support the installation of the housing residential life smart bin system.

Ideal Candidate

  • Undergraduate student interested in sustainability, environmental science, or public works. No graduate students
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Comfortable with fieldwork and data entry
  • Enthusiastic about waste reduction and recycling education
