Agriculture Education Intern, Northern Santa Barbara County

General Overview:

The Northern Santa Barbara County (NSBC) Agriculture Education Intern supports SEEAG’s flagship education programs, Farm-to-Food Lab and STEM Careers Pathways in Agriculture, by helping deliver hands-on, farm-based learning experiences for students across northern Santa Barbara County. The intern will primarily educate and secondarily assist with lesson preparation, field trip support, farm and education site maintenance, classroom and outdoor activities, and other program-related responsibilities that help students understand where their food comes from and explore careers in agriculture and STEM.

This internship is part of SEEAG’s experiential, STEM-based learning framework and provides meaningful exposure to agricultural education, nonprofit operations, program coordination, and community engagement. The intern is expected to complete 125 hours during the internship period.

The NSBC Agriculture Education Intern should expect to work at various SEEAG locations throughout northern Santa Barbara County, including SEEAG’s office in Orcutt, the Farm Lab site at Allan Hancock College, local schools, partner farms, and other education sites. SEEAG is a small nonprofit organization, the intern may also assist with administrative, event, and other organizational tasks as needed.

STIPEND MODEL:

Total stipend: $2,500

Disbursement: 50 percent at midpoint, 50 percent at successful completion

 

Core Responsibilities:

Program Support & Education

  • Deliver hands-on educational programs for students in third grade, middle school, and high school.
  • Support classroom lessons, farm-based learning experiences, STEM activities, and agricultural education programs.
  • Assist with lesson setup, student engagement, activity facilitation, and program logistics.
  • Educate students about agriculture, the food supply chain, environmental stewardship, and the future of food and resource management.
  • Support experiential workshops that highlight current agricultural practices, technologies, and innovations.
  • Introduce students to agricultural and STEM-related career opportunities.
  • Help students identify resources related to college programs, internships, volunteer opportunities, and career pathways.
  • Assist with on-site program setup and teardown.

Farm & Education Site Maintenance

  • Assist with routine farm maintenance of the Farm Lab education site at Allan Hancock College.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of learning stations and outdoor education spaces.

Program Operations & Coordination

  • Assist with curriculum development and refinement for Farm-to-Food Lab and STEM Careers Pathways in Agriculture programs.
  • Organize and maintain classroom supplies, STEM materials, learning stations, produce, and program resources.
  • Assist with van and site preparation, including station setup, material organization, and program supplies.
  • Assist with tracking student participation and other program metrics for grant reporting.

Social Media & Content Creation

  • Capture photo and video content during programs and events.
  • Upload and organize approved content in SEEAG’s cloud storage system.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum age 18; is currently working towards a high school, GED, or collegiate certificate or degree.
  • This internship is supported through Work-Based Learning grant funding, which is intended to expand access to career opportunities for students facing economic barriers. Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:
    • Qualify for free or reduced-price lunch
    • Be experiencing homelessness or have foster youth status
    • Be a recipient of a Pell Grant or Promise Grant
  • Demonstrated interest in agriculture, environmental education, communications, or nonprofit work.
  • Reliable transportation required for on-site activities across Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties.
  • Prior volunteer or community engagement experience preferred but not required.
