Writer & Content Strategist, Digital Marketing — History Majors

YOUR HISTORY DEGREE TRAINED YOU FOR THIS JOB.

We are specifically recruiting History majors—not despite your degree, but because of what it trained you to do.

Highland Park, Illinois | Full-Time | On Site Only | $42,000–$62,000

About Scholarships.com

Since 1999, Scholarships.com has helped more than 26 million students find money for college. We operate one of the internet’s largest scholarship search platforms, using content, data, and technology to make scholarship search more understandable, useful, and efficient for students and families.

Why We’re Looking for History Majors

If you studied History, you spent years learning how to follow evidence, evaluate sources, distinguish reliable information from noise, understand context, reconcile conflicting accounts, and turn complicated material into a clear narrative.

Those aren’t peripheral skills in this position. They are at the heart of the job.

As a Content Strategist & Writer, Digital Marketing, you will research and create student-facing web and email content, review scholarship information for accuracy, support targeted marketing campaigns, analyze results, and help us use technology more effectively.

Your work will help a student understand an opportunity, help a campaign reach the right audience, and help our team keep the underlying information accurate and current.

We value actual intelligence first: your ability to assess sources, understand context, write clearly, exercise judgment, and catch what others miss.

You do not need to arrive as an AI or digital-marketing expert. We can teach you platforms, processes, metrics, and tools.

The technology can be learned. The thinking is the hard part—and your History degree has already trained you to do it.

AI tools may help organize information, compare drafts, identify items for review, analyze results, or check grammar and clarity. They do not replace careful research, fact-checking, source analysis, editorial judgment, or accountability for the final work.

What You’ll Do

  • Research, write, and edit. Create and update website pages, targeted email campaigns, and selected social content for students, parents, educators, and scholarship providers.
  • Evaluate sources. Research scholarship-related topics, verify facts, reconcile conflicting information, and translate source material into clear, useful, student-friendly content.
  • Help students find what matters. Apply audience awareness and basic SEO practices—clear headings, focused keywords, and logical page structure—to make content easier to find and understand.
  • Run targeted campaigns. Support email, digital, and postal campaigns from brief to deployment: draft and review content, check layouts, complete QA, coordinate details, and manage send schedules.
  • Keep scholarship information accurate. Review submissions and listings for completeness, eligibility requirements, deadlines, award amounts, accuracy, and understandable descriptions.
  • Analyze what worked. Monitor measures such as opens, clicks, and conversions; distinguish meaningful results from noise and turn findings into concise observations and practical next steps.
  • Use AI intelligently. Use AI tools for research support, content alternatives, analysis, reporting, quality checks, and routine workflows—but independently verify facts and apply human judgment before content, data, or recommendations are published or implemented.
  • Keep the operation organized. Maintain campaign, client, vendor, purchase order, insertion order, and billing records; identify and document better processes.

What We’re Looking For

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. History majors are specifically encouraged to apply.
  • Strong research and source-analysis skills: you instinctively ask where information came from, whether it is reliable, what context matters, and what still needs to be verified.
  • Clear writing, editing, proofreading, and communication skills; you can make complicated material concise without making it vague.
  • Critical thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to distinguish strong evidence from assumptions or incomplete information.
  • Attention to detail and a practical project-management approach to multiple deadlines.
  • Curiosity, intellectual flexibility, and the ability to learn unfamiliar subjects and tools quickly.
  • Comfort learning digital tools, including email platforms, spreadsheets, CMS tools, dashboards, basic marketing analytics, and AI tools used as support—not substitutes for source analysis, accuracy, or editorial responsibility.

Relevant experience through employment, internships, campus organizations, research, publications, student media, independent projects, or comparable work is preferred.

Exceptional recent History graduates are encouraged to apply.

Experience with digital marketing, SEO, email platforms, analytics, CMS tools, spreadsheets, Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or similar technologies is helpful—but not a prerequisite for a strong candidate.

We would rather find someone who knows how to research, question, think, write, verify, and learn than someone who simply knows how to operate today’s software.

What You’ll Gain

  • Hands-on experience applying the research, source analysis, writing, and contextual thinking of a History education to real professional work.
  • Practical skills in content strategy, SEO, targeted email marketing, campaign QA, marketing analytics, performance reporting, and scholarship-data curation.
  • Experience using AI and other technology responsibly: knowing what can be automated, what needs verification, and when human judgment matters most.
  • Direct exposure to leadership and collaboration with marketing, operations, and product/engineering colleagues.
  • A foundation for growth into more senior content, marketing, operations, or product responsibilities.

This role is not remote and not hybrid.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. Central Time, with a one-hour lunch break.

Salary range: $42,000–$62,000, aligned with experience.

How to Apply

Please submit:

  • A resume.
  • A brief cover letter explaining how your History education prepared you for this role and why the position interests you.
  • A short analysis exercise: Write one prompt you would give an AI tool to review a hypothetical email campaign’s results, identify what additional information it would need, and recommend what should be tested next. Then, in 2–3 sentences, explain what you would independently verify before relying on the AI’s response.

We’re not asking you to explain away a History degree. We’re asking you to show us what you learned to do with it.
