Division Manager, Austin Parks and Recreation
Purpose:
This position provides direction and leadership for a division within Austin Parks and Recreation for the City of Austin.
Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
- Plans, organizes, directs, and reviews development and coordination of a division within Austin Parks and Recreation.
- Estimates, prepares, and proposes the division's annual budget.
- Monitors and authorizes expenses and expenditures.
- Develops annual and long-term range goals and objectives.
- Collaborates with other departments and agencies, such as schools, businesses, etc.
- Provides advice and assistance to citizens, contractors, management, etc.
- Works with public and advisory boards to resolve issues and conflicts.
- Plans Capital Improvement Projects.
- Performs contract management duties, such as negotiating, approving, and monitoring contracts.
- Conducts and attends meetings, conferences, seminars, etc.
Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised:
Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, counseling and recommendation for dismissal.

- Knowledge of Parks and Recreation Programs.
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws.
- Knowledge of City practice, policy and procedures.
- Knowledge of fiscal planning and budget preparation.
- Knowledge of supervisory and managerial techniques and methods.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
- Skill in handling multiple tasks and prioritizing.
- Skill in using computers and related software.
- Skill in data analysis and problem solving.
- Skill in planning and organizing.
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and changes in priorities.
- Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with other City employees and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in a field related to Business Administration, Public Administration, or related/relevant field, plus eight (8) years of planning, directing, and organizing experience, two (2) of which were in a supervisory or management capacity.
Licenses and Certifications Required:
None.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience:
- Experience managing multiple community recreation facilities.
- Experience conducting community stakeholder engagement and board meetings.
- Experience with recreational programming including organizing staff development training workshops.
- Experience with public speaking, public presentation, and adult training workshops.
- Experience developing public/private partnerships.
- Experience with Governmental contract management and compliance.
Preferred Skill:
- Proficient with Microsoft Suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Access.
Other:
- Ability to travel to more than one work location.
