POSITION OVERVIEW

National Review is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Studio Technician to support in-studio and remote-integrated recording operations for recorded op-eds, interviews, panel discussions, and podcasts. This role is responsible for studio setup, technical prep, live switching using an ATEM production switcher, and ensuring smooth, high-quality recordings for NR's video and audio platforms. This is a full-time, in-office position based in Washington, DC.

The Studio Technician will work closely with the Executive Producer, editors, and on-air talent to prepare the studio for each session, operate the switcher during recordings, and troubleshoot technical issues in real time.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare the studio for recorded op-eds, interviews, panel discussions, and podcasts, including camera setup, lighting, audio, and signal flow checks.
  • Operate the ATEM production switcher during in-person and remote-integrated recordings, treating remote guest feeds as standard production inputs and managing source selection, graphics, lower-thirds, and program output.
  • Set up and test microphones, audio interfaces, and monitoring for talent and crew before each session.
  • Manage recording workflows, ensuring proper file naming, storage, and handoff to post-production editors.
  • Perform routine maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repairs on studio equipment, including cameras, switchers, audio gear, and cabling.
  • Maintain an organized, safe, and efficient studio environment, including cable management, equipment storage, and inventory tracking.
  • Collaborate with editorial and production staff to adapt studio setups for different formats and special projects.
  • Document studio configurations, signal flows, and standard operating procedures for consistent operations.
  • Occasional flexibility for early morning, evening, or weekend recordings as needed.
     

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2-4 years of experience in studio operations, broadcast engineering, or live production support.
  • Hands-on experience operating an ATEM production switcher (or equivalent live switcher) in a multi-camera environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of camera systems, lighting, audio setup (XLR, interfaces, monitoring), and SDI/NDI signal flow.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical issues quickly under pressure during live or recorded sessions.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50 lbs regularly, and up to 70 lbs occasionally with assistance or equipment. Comfort working on ladders or step stools and maneuvering gear in tight spaces.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in studio prep, cable management, and equipment care.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Personal sense of humility, respect for others, and a commitment to continually learn and improve.
  • A belief in the principles of America's founding, including individual liberty, limited government, economic freedom, personal responsibility, and traditional values.
  • Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States.
     

STANDOUT CANDIDATES MAY BRING:

  • Experience with podcast recording setups and multi-track audio workflows.
  • Familiarity with streaming platforms and encoding tools (vMix, OBS, Tricaster, or similar).
  • Basic knowledge of IT/networking for studio systems (IP cameras, NDI, Dante, etc.).
  • Experience documenting technical workflows and training non-technical staff on equipment use.
  • Interest in news, politics, or current events.
