ABOUT GALVANIS

Galvanis is an early-stage biotechnology company developing pharmacologic therapies that act on endogenous bioelectric signals involved in tissue repair. Our lead program is focused on corneal epithelial wound healing, with broader applications in regenerative medicine. We are building an internal preclinical R&D team in the Boston area to advance the program through translational proof-of-concept, candidate selection, and in vivo development.

POSITION SUMMARY

We are hiring a Scientist to join as an early member of R&D. This is a hands-on experimental role spanning cell and tissue models, assay development, pharmacology, microscopy, and quantitative analysis. The Scientist will work directly with the Founder & CEO and scientific advisors and will collaborate with external research partners as needed.

This hire is expected to become a technical owner within the program. As the team grows, strong performance can expand into responsibility for program strategy, mentoring, and scientific team leadership.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and execute preclinical studies using mammalian cell and ex vivo tissue models.
• Develop, optimize, and qualify functional, imaging, and molecular assays; establish appropriate controls, analysis methods, and performance criteria.
• Plan and conduct dose-response, mechanism, and candidate-characterization studies that support program decisions.
• Perform quantitative microscopy and image analysis and integrate imaging results with complementary biological readouts.
• Analyze and interpret experimental data, including identification of sample, reagent, instrumentation, and assay artifacts.
• Maintain complete, traceable experimental records; prepare protocols, technical summaries, and study reports.
• Troubleshoot assay and laboratory workflow failures and design controlled experiments to identify root causes.
• Support transfer and implementation of methods developed with external collaborators; review raw data and method performance from CROs and vendors.
• Contribute to laboratory build-out, including equipment selection and qualification, SOPs, reagent and sample workflows, inventory, and safety practices.
• Train and mentor research associates or technicians as the internal team grows, and present data and recommendations at program reviews.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• PhD in cell biology, molecular biology, physiology, pharmacology, bioengineering, vision science, or a related discipline. Exceptional MS-level candidates with substantial independent research experience will also be considered.
• Strong hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture and quantitative biological assays.
• Demonstrated experience designing controlled experiments, troubleshooting assay performance, and interpreting dose-response or perturbation data.
• Experience with fluorescence microscopy and quantitative image analysis.
• Strong scientific documentation and data-organization practices, including clear reporting of methods, controls, deviations, and limitations.
• Ability to work independently at the bench and communicate results clearly in writing and in scientific discussions.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

• Primary cell culture, organ culture, or other ex vivo tissue systems.
• Epithelial biology, wound healing, ocular surface or vision science, or regenerative medicine.
• Small-molecule pharmacology, preclinical drug discovery, or lead-characterization studies.
• Electrophysiology, ion transport, or other functional physiology methods.
• Molecular readouts such as qPCR, immunostaining, protein assays, or related methods.
• ImageJ/FIJI and Python, R, MATLAB, or comparable tools for quantitative analysis.
• Assay qualification, method transfer, CRO oversight, or work in a biotech/pharmaceutical development setting.

FIRST 12 MONTHS

• Establish or transfer core experimental methods and document their performance in the internal laboratory.
• Generate reproducible preclinical pharmacology datasets that support clear program decisions.
• Put in place the SOPs, data practices, and laboratory workflows required for consistent execution as study volume increases.
• Take ownership of a defined scientific workstream and help train the next members of the research team.
