Technical Editor

Do you have a sharp editorial eye and a passion for making technical documentation clear and polished? Are you eager to step into a high‑trust role at a respected Northern California firm?

 

As a Technical Editor at PACE Engineering, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality of our firm's written deliverables. You will proofread and edit a variety of documents, including proposals, technical memoranda, engineering reports, and operations manuals, from each of our in-house disciplines. 

 

ARE YOU:

A Skilled Proofreader/Editor? You have a strong command of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure and know how to apply these principles to technical and professional writing. You can improve consistency and readability without altering the document’s technical meaning. 

A Quick Learner? You pick up new subject matter quickly, ask clarifying questions, and take detailed notes. You are good at recognizing patterns and making logical connections. You are naturally curious and approach unfamiliar subject matter with a desire to understand how things work.

Detail Oriented? You have meticulous attention to detail and a keen eye for even the smallest inconsistencies in format/layout, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. You may even tend to spot typos and formatting irregularities in everyday life.

Reliable Under Pressure?You work effectively in a deadline-driven environment and remain focused when demands are high. You can manage multiple assignments simultaneously without compromising quality, and you shift gears quickly when priorities change. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES IN YOUR FIRST YEAR MAY INCLUDE:

Within the first 30 days and ongoing:

  • Gaining exposure to a wide variety of document types from each department, working closely with the Head of Technical Editing.
  • Becoming familiar with PACE's style conventions and technical editing workflow processes.
  • Proofreading and editing small documents.

Within the next 3-6 months and ongoing:

  • Proofreading and editing documents ranging from small letters to large reports and manuals.
  • Reading/Digesting large volumes of technical information.
  • Developing skills to cross-check information and ensure content consistency. 
  • Building strong working relationships with multiple Project Managers.
  • Taking ownership of assigned documents as the documents’ primary editor, working directly with engineers to ask questions, resolve ambiguities, and address grammatical issues throughout document development.

 

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, applicable certificate, or equivalent professional experience required
    1. *Technical writing or editing/proofreading emphasis is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of English grammar and punctuation rules required
  • Strong editing/proofreading skills, including spelling and reading comprehension required

*Experience editing/proofreading technical documentation is highly preferred.

  • Ability to adhere to company style for grammar, punctuation, and formatting required

*Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style or other style guides is preferred.

  • Ability to explain editing decisions based on established grammar, usage, and style principles required
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, including familiarity with styles and captions required
  • General proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
  • Ability to learn quickly required
  • Meticulous attention to detail required
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments, competing deadlines, and shifting priorities required
  • Strong communication skills required
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment required
  • Openness to AI tools for workflow efficiency preferred
  • Ability to work in-person, full time, in Redding, California required

Valid driver's license with a good driving record and reliable transportation required
